SLOOOOOW Sony Laptop

Hello everyone,
I am new here and I just wanted to ask for a bit of advice for my SLOW laptop.

Well I have realised for some time that my Sony Vaio VGN-FS315E is very slow, especially the start up. Anyway I thought it was time I tried to fix it so I brought it to a local computer shop to upgrade the RAM. There was a very helpful man there who put a 1GB RAM in the laptop (resulting in 1.25GB RAM altogether). I was all excited that my laptop would be faster for once. Anyway he turned on the laptop to see if the RAM had been accepted.

He was REALLY shocked to see how slow the laptop was. It took 5 minutes for the opening windows screen, then the sceen goes black for another minute and then it finially opens the blue user page. I click on my user and it starts to open my user....which takes another 4 minutes or so till it is ready to use. We were waiting for over 10 minutes. He said that he has never seen such a slow laptop before. I always knew it was very slow but never really knew if it was normal or not :-P. The RAM had been accepted by the way. He told me that the RAM wont effect the start up time when it is soooo slow and the laptop is so slow that it is no use upgrading the RAM anymore until I fix the slow problem.

I have also noticed problems with the audio. I cant play anything without the sound stuttering. It drives me crazy!!! When Im using the laptop the speed is okay...but still slow :-(. My friends complain at school that the computers there are slow but personally I think they are exceedingly fast! :-P

The man in the shop said I should completly format the laptop. Therefore i've been doing research on how to do this. I bought a harddrive and I have saved all the important things from the laptops HD to the external HD. I have tried making a recovery CD and it has caused some problems but I am getting there :-). I have made the first CD but then couldnt find another DVD to record onto, I will make that tomorrow (if it works!). I also wanted to know if I do this recovery process will I lose the software that came with the laptop (like Photoshop Elements 3 and Adobe Premiere) I REALLY want to keep these software programmes.

Will formatting my whole laptop help my problem? Is something else causing the problem? (Perhaps a virus?)

Sorry for the REALLY long post :-) Any advice would be HIGHLY appreciated,
Thankyou, Joyce

Lol, yes not very usefull but I have figured out that what you are saying is VERY true! :-P. I have solved my problem...after ALOT of failed attempts i finially managed to make the recovery CDs. I completly recoverd the laptop. I am SOOO happy that I did. My problems are solved! The laptop is ready to use in under 2 minutes!! Fantastic :-). I know it probebly won't last long but I'm enjoying it while it lasts!
One thing I must say i really like about this laptop is the free software that comes with it (well 2 programmes....the rest is kinda annoying) I really enjoy using Photoshop Elements and Premiere. If I get another laptop it won't have these programmes....and they are expensive to buy :-(. I am REALLY looking forward to going MAC....but this laptop is fine for the moment :-).
Thankyou everyone!

Just make sure the first thing you do is install all of the latest updates from Microsoft and whatever AV program you use. Otherwise, you'll quickly end up in the same predicament.
Congrats on the recovery!
