Upgrading CPU In Inspiron 1300

Hi
I have an Inspiron 1300 laptop with a 1.5Ghz Celeron M processor in. I was wondering if it is possible to replace this with a faster intel dual core processor. I have established that the celeron is in a 479 socket so would a dual core that fits in a 479 socket work. Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks

Nope. The 1300 uses the Intel 910GML chipset, which does not support the dual core processors. Also, this chipset is limited to a 400MHz FSB. Your upgrade options are quite limited and probably not worth the cost.

In that case is it possible to upgrade the mainboard to one that will take one of the newer dual core processors inside my existing inspiron 1300 case? If so where would i be able to purchase one?
Thanks

Once again that option is also fruitless. The 1300 is a very baseline system which doesnt share any kind of common chasis designs with any other of Dell's premium notebooks. Your going to be spending a lot of money and time getting little out of the machine. Not to dash your hopes but if you want a real performance jump its time to shelf or sell the 1300 and move onto a higher line of notebooks like HP DT series or Dell Inspiron 1520/1530 series notebooks.

Hello,

This is Richard from the Dell Online Community Outreach group. It is true that you could sell this system and buy something else. However, if you had a 1.5GHz Celeron M in this system, there are other processors upgrades may do the trick for you. For example you can install a 2.0GHz, 755, 2MB, Pentium-M Dothan. This would be a nice performance increase than what you had before.

I do not know your money situation, but it is always nice to know your options. The following is a list of processors that can be installed into you computer.

1.6GHz, 725a, 2MB Pentium-M, Dothan, 400MHz
1.7GHz, 735, 2MB Pentium-M, Dothan, 400MHz
1.8GHz, 745, 2MB Pentium-M, Dothan, 400MHz
2.0GHz, 755, 2MB, Pentium-M, Dothan, 400MHz
2.1GHz, 765, 2MB Pentium-M, Dothan, 400MHz

What you have now: 1.5GHz, 370, 1MB, Celeron-M, 400MHz

Here is the link for the Dell 1300 Inspiron service manual, so you can get an idea what is involved in this upgrade.

Will the following CPU work in the Inspiron 1300? Note the 533 designation instead of the 400.

Thanks,
Paul
Intel Mobile Pentium M 2.13GHz/2MB/533 CPU (SL7SL)

According to #2 reply above it will not work due to chipset constraint.

qhn,
Thank you for pointing out the reference to the 400 MHz FSB in sakor1's post. It says the "chipset is limited to a 400MHz FSB". Could this mean that the 533MHz chip will be "limited" to a frequency of 400MHz? (delivering slightly less performance). Or does it mean that a 533MHz chip is not compatible.

In a related post I recently discovered the following: "The Inspiron 1300 memory speed and Front side bus are 400 MHz. However, your processor, Pentium M Centrino 2.0GHz 2MB 533MHz FSB SL7SM, which is a Dothan will probably work. But, keep in mind you are upgrading at your own risk" suggesting the 533MHz chip will work in the Inspiron 1300.

Perhaps I should rephrase my question, What is the risk of running a 533MHz CPU on a board with a 400MHz FSB?

No risk. You just don't get the full performance.

What about upgrading it to 1.66/2M/667
nope ... according to #2 reply
