Good day everyone!!! And good news follows =).

Here it is: http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/g...-inch-laptops/

P-170FX MAX will come pretty MAXXED up. We`re talking X7900 Core 2 Extreme processor, 1920 x 1200 screen, 400GB 7200RPM SATA HDD and a HD DVD disc drive plus 8800GTX of course for no more than $3000...

WELCOME BACK, GATEWAY

That's pretty nice.. The top one makes no sense as they put a decent chip in a scaled down laptop which to me negates what one would buy it for. I guess unless someone wants to game and doesn't care about the resolution and can live with the slower processor..
Hmmmmm, what I fail to understand is they offer a nice laptop w/ next gen GPU's but bottleneck it with a 1.66 CPU speed.

Blows my mind

From this thread:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=206261

the CPU appears to easy to upgrade and the LCD is 1440 x 900 so the gaming res. will be pretty decent. I think Gateway has a winner on their hands... what a nice laptop at such a great price
post #7 of 120
I agree.. I do wish though they had a better display option. But you're right. This should be great for gaming at that resolution. I just saw their 30" Display and wow, what a nice LCD..

I'm going to Best buy now to check out this new laptop. I have nothing but problems with My m9750 (display issues)... and Alienware : (

Is the GPU soldered on, or a unique form factor card like my Dell 1705?
Interesting. Very interesting. I talked to a Gateway rep via chat, and he said he could get me a much better deal than advertised. It would be wise to wait for some feedback and reviews before purchasing, though.
Very interesting, the GW chat rep doesn't know much info about it and say it's not available, when it's available in BB for over a week.

BTW, they charge for shipping the unit if you order online, right? And they don't pay for shipping charge of your laptop if you need to send in for repair, right?

Dell pays for all shippings if it's within waranty.

Wow good find, go Gateway!
I just placed my order for one on the BB website for a local pickup. Hopefully the local BB has them in stock for me to pickup tomorrow.

From what I've been reading, the BIOS has a built in overclocking feature, for use w/the Intel Core 2 Extreme series of cpu's. From the pictures I've seen on the net, it looks like the cpu is real easy to upgrade. That, and having a pair of hard drives, setup w/RAID 0.

I wish it had a better screen though, but oh well.

If I'm able to get one tomorrow, I'll get some benchmarks posted this weekend.

Picked up my FX yesterday and posted a review on it on the Gateway Reviews, w/pictures.

Also it's offical, it's on sale at Best Buy tomorrow, January 27th, for $1249.99, or $100 off, as well as a free game, if ordered, your choice, for $49.99 or less. I'll have to go to get my $100 back, as well as get my free game.

Update: Got the $100 credited back to me, and I'm suppose to be getting that free game, I picked Crysis, sent to me.

Couldn't help it and got me one of these. I already upgraded it with the money I saved.

How much did you find the second 250 gb WD hard drive for? I saw it at BB for something like $179.00 I believe, and at Newegg for around $150.

I was thinking about getting two 60 gb Hitachi 7200 RPM hard drives, for a total of $128.00, and RAIDing them. The Hitachi's should be faster than the WD, especially when set up as RAID 0.

Any issues installing the new cpu? I may wait w/the cpu on mine until the T9xxx series become available.

So overall, how do like the performance of your setup?

You need to do some benchmarks.

I just ordered a pair of 60 gb Hitachi 7200 RPM hard drives, which I'll install in place of the single 250 gb Seagate that came w/the FX.

The Hitachi's are both faster, as well as cheaper, than installing a second 250 gb Seagate. I'll have 120 gb w/the Hitachi's set up as RAID 0 vs. 500 gb w/the Seagates. Besides, 120 gb is plenty for me.

I'll get some benchmarks posted on both the single 250 gb Seagate and then on the dual Hitachi's, set up as RAID 0, hopefully by this weekend, on my Gateway P-6831FX Laptop Review Thread.

I may install XP Pro in place of Vista, if I can get a good price on an OEM CD.

With the cpu, I'll wait for the T9xxx series to become available.

I found the second WD hard drive at best buy. Funny thing is that the retail drive is more expensive then the external drive. The external 250gb WD drive is on sale for around $140 so I just got that one and opened it up and it was the exact same drive, WD2500BEVS SATA. Go look for a 10% coupon also.

I read on Tom's Hardware or anandtech that these drives were very fast RAID 0 and indeed they were. They are a lot faster than my single 200gb 7,200rpm 16mb laptop hard drive. Here's a comparison:

HD TUNE:
200GB 7,200rpm 16mb cache
Minimum - 32.5mb/s
Maximum - 65.1mb/s
Average - 52.2mb/s
Access time - 14.9ms
Burst Rate - 61.6mb/s
CPU Usage - 9.3%

Single WD 250GB 5,400rpm 8mb
Minimum - 15.0mb/s
Maximum - 51.8mb/s
Average - 40.1mb/sec
Access Time - 25.0ms
Burst Rate - 65.7mb/s
CPU Usage - 11.7%

RAID 0 WD 250GB 5,400rpm 8mb cache
Minimum - 50.0mb/s
Maximum - 87.8mb/s
Average - 68.5mb/s
Access Time - 17.9ms
Burst Rate - 57.6mb/s
CPU Usage - 13.2%

So you can see the RAID 0 WD 5400rpm are very fast and helps a ton on load times in games. Overall it's a huge improvement over a single drive configuration as well as the fastest laptop drive out there, the Hitachi 200gb 7,200rpm plus you get 500gb.

Let me know how the RAID 0 60gb 7200rpm are. I don't think they have perpendicular tech and they seem to have very close seek and latency as the 250gb 54000rpm ones as well as the same cache. I have had a single seagate 160gb 7200rpm drive before, also a 100gb and 60gb 7200rpm IDE and the hitachi 200gb 7200rpm trumps it, but these RAID WDs are killers. 16mb cache was fun though.

Oh and the T5450 has to go. I was going insane on how slow it was and upgrading the CPU was a cake walk. You can get a T7500 for less than $200 and it is totally worth it, even if you are waiting for the penryn CPUs.

Also the 2x2GB RAM is also a decent upgrade. You can get a 4gb dual channel set at frys.com for $50-60 shipped after rebate. Windows score went from 4.5 to 4.8 and helped other benchmarks tests. Even though Windows still sees 3GB, for some reason the 4GB was still faster in tests over the 3GB.

I'll try to find the part number for the LCD. I forgot to write it down before I installed it but I'll search through Windows for it.
