with the T5550 CPU

The newer version has a better CPU by about 200 MHz. Doesn't effect gaming that much...

I'm seriously thinking about one of these but I'd like some clarification. It looks like these are fairly easy to upgrade but can someone tell me if this is doable by only a moderately experienced user? I've completely dissasembled and reassembled a desktop but the only internal thing I've ever done with a laptop was realign a wireless card that got loose.

How difficult would the following be? (this is in order of priority to me)
Install T9300
Install 2nd HD (preferably >= 200GB, non RAID obviously)
Instal new LCD
Instal Blu-Ray player (a la HP dv9700t)
Upgrade RAM

Thanks.

Well, I don't believe in spending out the *** but I think it's ok to get something for yourself once in a while. The last time I got myself something major for my own pleasure was an electric guitar starter set for $300 ish... that was 4 years ago. Now I'm graduating (and have a full scholarship to a good college) so I figure it's ok to splurge a little again.

Relating to my previous question, would tampering with the laptop void its warranty?

YES, in most cases it would, but, all you have to do (if you ever need warranty work done) you will have to put back all the OEM Parts, if you want Gateway to honor your warranty, just something to consider...you never know Remember: FEED THE PIG . ORG

To awnser your questions

. Installing a CPU on this laptop is a easy 5 min job, easieist laptop to upgrade i ever have seen.

Adding second HD again is an easy 5 min job, and highly recommneded

LCD upgrade to WUXGA was straight forward, took about 30 min, you need to retain the gateway inverter, some WUXGA displays are a little more easier to install. (They may have the inverter rivited to the display)

Blu-ray can be done, I have not done so, but you may have to use the bezel from your old drive.

Memory is a 3 min job, but unless your planning to go 64 bit OS, I would leave the 3 gig stock as is.

Good Luck

Gateway is not Dell, imo they would most likley void the warranty, but then again this laptop series is sold through BB, they maybe repairing it them selves.

How ever, Hard drive, Memory, upgrades should be fine, the laptop was designed to be expanded in this case, but the laptop warranty would not cover the second hard drive or the 4 gig memory.

CPU and display is another matter, But if you damage the display t is not covered anyways, (unless you purchase that coverage from BB)

It should be noted gateway does not sell extended warranties for the units sold at BB, but BB will sell you extnded warranties on this laptop including accidental damage

So if I get the BB extended warranty I can upgrade to my heart's content and still be covered?

no guarante on that ever, Upgrading is always risking voiding the warranty

As a precaution I would keep the old parts so if anything goes wrong you place them back in for service.

The Hard drive, you can upgrade that and it should not void the warranty but the drive would not be covered by the laptop warranty, same goes for memory.

I know for fact gateway stated that even putting XP on the P-6831FX would void there warranty.

Weak. As long as you have the Vista disk handy you can reinstall it if anything goes wrong.

Is there a reason why the X FX version has 4 GB RAM but a 32 bit OS instead of 64 bit? Kind of seems like a waste unless I'm missing something...

... the promise of a system-ready for 64bits version, w/o additional hardware cost? it is called marketing

cheers ...

I would consider this laptop a more DIY notebook. Those who buy it are content with its specs-performance-price and the others buy it to personalize the specs with upgrades due to its price.

The more I read about the Gateway P-6860FX the more I like it.

Pound for pound I can't find another laptop as good for the pricetag and ease of upgrade. And, since I have best buy gift cards, it lessens the blow.

Any other major suggestions in that 1000 to 1400 range?
there is no other laptop in this price range with a 8800 card in it that I lnow of.

The laptop goes on sale every few weeks as well, I would keep an eye on the BB site and pull the trigger when it does.
