With the dell when you used the disk it would stick all the crap back on the HD. That was why I didnt use the disk as I figured it would be the same thing.

Kinda sucks having downloaded CSS and and 3dmark on it but I guess I can just re do it anyway. better then dealing with all the bloat.

All and all I am very impressed byt this laptop. Never thoughtI would buy a gateway, but then again didnt think I would have bought a dell before I did either.

Can anyone confirm if there is the possibility to SLI this thing. One notebook review the reviewer said he believed there was an extra mini pci e slot which he believed was going to be for a second possible card. If this thing can use the new processors and the capability to go sli I think this is one of the best deals I have ever found.

The P-6831 FX and the P-171xx FX don't support SLI. That extra slot is for the Intel Turbo Memory Card.

I picked one of these up in Best Buy in Canada.

1350.00 on sale from 1400.00

I haven't really put it threw any paces yet, but I am looking to upgrade a few parts. I was >< really close to dropping 3 grand on a dell for a 8800 gt (s or x) but with the money I saved I'm hopping I can upgrade the 2 parts I'm not all that fond of. The screen and the proc.

I to am looking to get a t9xxx series and will wait to purchase that when available. One question I have in regards to the LCD is, would it be compatible with an HP zd8000? The screen in my zd8000 is busted, so I was hoping I could order a wuxga for my new gateway and then but the wxga from the gateway into the HP.

Oh, and any definitive yes or no on the upgrade-ability of the video cards in the FX's (MXM) ??

Thanks for posting. I was on the fence, then the price jumped to $1699 and that knocked me off the fence. Now I think I'll grab one. I already have my 4GB RAM and WD 250GB drive sitting here from Newegg.

The thing I like about it also because you can just go out and pick it up once you made the purchase. You don't have to wait a week or two. But, the processor is kinda bothering me. Where can I buy a mobile processor these days...

I will definitely be replacing the processor. You can buy them at www.newegg.com I am going to hold out a month or 2 for the new Penryn processors. A die shrink and less power consumption.

Here is the most bang for the buck if you can't wait:

That's a good idea, I'll probably do the same.

For around a $100 more, you can get a 2.5 GHz, T9300 w/a 6 mb L2 Cache. While Newegg isn't carrying them yet, there are others who are.

I dont get why not one wants these straight from gateway.com since the 1999 model has a better screen, decent penryn CPU and bigger HDD than the BB model.

Agree w/ Yoob, the 1920x 1200 is a must with an 8800GTS.

The P-6831 FX has the same 250 gb HD as the P-171X FX.

To upgrade the P-6831 FX up to a 2.4 GHz T8300, that comes w/the P-171X FX, is only around $250.00. The 2.5 GHz T9300 is $335.00

The video screen and the fingerprint reader are the only things that really separate the two.

The P-6831 FX is on sale for $1199.99 and the P-171X FX is $1999.99.

$1200.00 P-6831 FX
$250.00 T8300 cpu
------------
$1450.00 Total

Actually I was thinking of going for this model along with the 3-year warranty. I don't want to void my warranty by buying the cheap model and upgrading the processor myself, even if it's cheaper. Never know when you will need that warranty! And also the screen resolution is higher as well from Gateway.

The screen is the same isn't it?

They both come w/the Nvidia M8800 GTS's. It's the display screens that are different.

The P-6831 comes w/a WXGA+ TFT Active Matrix (1440 x 900).

The P-171X comes w/a WUXGA TFT Active Matrix (1920 x 1200).

There isn't one of these available at any BB in North Carolina. I went in and got a rain check yesterday. The guy at BB said they don't even have any slated to come in on their next truck. I already have 4GB of RAM and a WD250 waiting to put in. I also have a 1920x1200 true life screen from a Dell e1705 to put in too. A steal at $1199!

Anyone know where to get a line on buying a x7800 or x7900 cpu... Can't seem to find one. I don't mind paying a bit for it seeing as Dell is more or less footing the bill here.
