A first glimpse of some 8800m GTX benchmarks

WidowPC Sting 517D2: GeForce 8800M GTX Benchmarks

WidowPC contacted us just before Christmas and gave us the chance to do an exclusive first review of their latest gaming notebook, the Sting 517D2. Needless to say, we jumped at the opportunity to review their notebook, since we have been trying - unsuccessfully - to get an 8800M laptop for testing and benchmarking in-house since we first heard about it in October
Perhaps this is old news, although I don't see a thread for it, but the folks over at Anandtech have posted a review of a "Black Widow" 17" laptop with a 8800M GTX. It appears to blow all other single cards out of the water, and can run with (and even exceed) an SLI 7950 setup. It's nice to finally seem some laptops shipping

The Black Widow strikes

Now if only Dell and Co. can keep up.

Ok, I couldn't make the PHP changes look right, so I'm editing it. I hope that those with the 8700m sli setup's can get access to these 8800 cards so they don't have to replace their rig to get the performance of these cards.

Sorry... my bad. Forgot to uncheck the signature thing.

Hopefully, that's all I forgot.

I've been waiting a long time for the Nvidia 8-series to reach laptops before looking to replace my 2 1/2 year old Dell XPS M170, which has been absolutely wonderful for gaming (mostly BF2, BF2142 and COD4). The 7950GTX wasn't much faster than my 7800GTX, but the 8800GTX looks like a good upgrade for future games (along with replacing my Pentium-M with a Core 2).

I just hope that someone releases a more mobile 15.4" or smaller laptop with this card (8800 GTX or GTS version). I'm not sure about other people, but I usually have my gaming rig plugged into an external LCD/keyboard/mouse when I'm at home, so I really don't need a 17" screen most of the time. A 15.4" screen might seem a bit small for gaming, but it would be a heck of a lot easier to game with on an airplane or in the back seat of a car, where I find the 17" a bit too large.

Anyway, eagerly awaiting more laptops with these cards.

In that article it states that at 1600 x 1200 in Crysis graphics settings need to be turned down to medium to achieve "decent" frame rates. I am really not that impressed. I guess I was expecting / hoping for more. An SLI review will be good to see when it comes available.

Alienware has released the m15x with the 8800M GTX...

I don't think the Crysis benchmark is surprising ... that game doesn't do much better on desktops with the 8800 GTX, so no reason to expect the 8800M version to do better.

Well as Dell kinda own Alienware it shouldnt be to long before they have them in the M1730
post #14 of 25
Hmmm. Maybe I am wrong, but the Alienware M15x doesn't seem to have external DVI/VGA output from the pictures I saw on their website. I think I see an S-video port, but that doesn't do a whole lot of good for exporting video to an LCD.

After my experience with the XPS M170 (which has probably seen over 2000+ hours of gaming without a single problem) I would rather go with a Dell anyway if they can get the 8800 GTX into the XPS M1530.

PS - haven't tried Crysis yet, but Bioshock, Call of Duty 4 and Quake Wars all ran perfect on my M170.

the m15x has a HDMI Port so you need an adaptor...

8800 GTX

Finally. I am as well owner of pinmodded Dell M170 2.4 GHZ with 7800GTX runnning @ 460/1200 and didn`t feel like it`s time to upgrade b4. Until NOW. Can`t wait for DELL to come out with theirs XPS power but here is one thing...it`s called GATEWAY FX and she`s making me want to switch

Look @ the specs, looks and pricing:

HERE

I am impressed GATEWAY

PS: what do you think about gateway brand???
Looks cool, a single 8800 is pretty awesome, and this thing costs about as much as an Alienware m9750 with 8700's running in SLI. If only if was SLI configuration for this GATEWAY FX though, I would jump for it.

i love my 8800gtx in my desktop and can only imagine how much i would love it on a notebook until that lead-free solder for the vram bga chips fails and causes the video to get distorted.

i have yet to see a high end graphic speaking notebook not have issues with the video getting distorted or going out all together. hope they have liquid cooling in there hehe jk but they really will need some good circulation in there.
I too share your fears about lead free soldering. Maybe once airplanes start falling from the sky people will wake up.

Back on topic.. I am more interested in Alienware's "BinaryGFX – Switch between high-performance graphics and integrated graphics". Someone MUST do a benchmark on how much extra battery life this gives you. Owning an XPS Gen2 has given me mixed results. I love the power but hate the lack of portability when not running multimedia intensive application.

Good stuff though, all what I'd expect from an 8800M.

I am in the same boat. Never wanted to upgrade to the e1705 or a 7950'd laptop since I have my 7800GTX 9300. This might change my mind though.

I also want to find the thread where people said a 8800GTX in a laptop will never happen.
