I have a Dell XPS M170
SPECS:
Intel Pentium M Centrino 760 2.0Ghz Processor
1Gb 533Mhz Ram
nVidia geForce Go 6800 Ultra
17" WUXGA Tru-Life Liquid Crystal Display
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center 2005 SP2
SigmaTel C-Major Intergrated Audio

The problem is sound been very gargly and sometimes direct music audio fails. I don't won't to buy a sound card.

1. Any drivers you use ?
2. Any tweaks you would recommend ?
3. Can cleaning the connectors fix it ?

Sorry, i really don't know how to explain this better.

Dell: Sound issues

Hello,

This is Richard from the Dell Online Community Outreach group. I was curious, is the audio quality poor with all media? This would include a basic compact disc music cd, MP3 file, streaming audio from the internet. Is there any difference at all?

Also, there is no audio card as it is part of the motherboard.

It's an intergrated audio controller. And yes every thing has poor playback (Gaming is probably the worst though) ...
It play's fine but it hits certain spots where it gargle's and then i lose my sound all together. And then it comes back after awhile. It's a SigmaTel C-Major....

Thanks for helping

Certainly will!

Call it in ASAP and get that bad boy fixed up hell, if they don't have XPS2 motherboards lying around they may just have to replace it with an M1730

Yes, sounds like the audio jack is borked. Unfortunately, you will most likely have to settle for a new dell laptop.

I would think it will be more than just a motherboard, but at the least...yes, a motherboard. The M1710's are barely left around right now, if they find one you'll get that. If not, the M1730. Either way you paid $399 for a $2000+ system

Why would they give me a new one ?

Because the XPS 2 by now has become so old that the M170 motherboards are probably not just lying around any longer, but rather out of stock. Without any replacement parts they have to upgrade you being that your computer is not equally replaceable any longer

I went thru the live chat so it's not 100% that they do have it.
That was some good support thought !!!
