Vista Premium or Ultimate, XPS1530

Thread Starter
Really close to making the jump and ordering a new Lappie. My old 9300 works fine but
is starting to show some of it's age. I have a XPS 1530 Spec'd out
with the following.
XPS M1530
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7700 (2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB, 4MB Cache)
System Color Tuxedo Black
Memory 3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms)
LCD, Color and camera High Resolution glossy widescreen 15.4 inch LCD(1680x1050) & 2MP Camera WSXGA
Video Card 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
Hard Drives Speed: 160GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive Free Fall Sensor

Trying to decide if I really need Vista Premium or Ultimate. Is there any benefits/cons?
I went with the 15" screeen because of my last experience travelling on a plane. My 9300
was a pain to lug around where as my daughter's 15" Fujitsu had no problem.
How's the onboard sound on the 1530; not asking for BOSE reproduction but if it's sounds
as as good as my 9300, that's okay...
I am getting this thru a Dell bundled package so I can't change too much...
Any info/opinions on this would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

If I remember, it is a 150$ difference between Home Premium and Ultimate - a non-trivial amount for most people.

Check here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista_editions

If you find yourself needing features from Business edition in addition to the Media Center capabilities (and possibly parental controls, etc) of Home Premium, then you might consider Ultimate. Then again, in the case of Dell, the price margin between Business and Ultimate is so small that those who need Business might as well buy Ultimate.

I would spend the extra money on something else besides Vista Ultimate. Premium serves well enough. Buy some nice accessories to finish your new rig off with.

I have ultimate on my desktop and premium on my laptop and I can safely say I don't miss any of the ultimate features when I use my lappy.

The main features that you might want ultimate for are -
bitlocker - encrypt your harddrive data so if your laptop is stolen they can't get to your files. Unless you have some seriously important data on there I'd forget this feature as if your system goes down you have no way of retrieving your data unless you get the system working again.

DreamScene - You can place video on your desktop rather than just a simple photo. While it was cool for a week the novelty soon wore off and I stopped using this feature to save resources.

Scan & Fax - cool tool to use your laptop as a fax machine but hardly a deal breaker.

There are some other features for business like remote access and back up but you can do all the stuff with free or cheap 3rd party apps.

Go for the premium and if they release something really cool for Ultimate you can use the Anytime upgrade option to go up to the Ultimate online (all the data you need is already on your vista premium disc it just needs to be unlocked).
