Fenuxx's New Desktop Setup and Build - Page 6

What memory are you running? Did you leave mem on auto or set the timings manually? Also you might try moving the dvd to the other sata controller if you haven't tried that already.

Set memory timings and voltage manually - if you haven't already done it.

What version of XP are you installing? Does it include any of the service packs?

There are usually issues going straight from Sp1 to Sp 2...if you're installing Sp 2 package. There are a couple of hotfixes that need to be installed between service packs.

OK, I did leave everything on auto. I just wanted to play it safe, and usually, that's the safest bet. Also, can't move the DVD drives as they are PATA, and I can only use the one included PATA port on the mobo for them (JMicron JMB363 controller that has 2 SATA and 1 PATA port attatched to it).

The memory itself is THIS STUFF.

With Windows, I'm using a fully slipstreamed disk. Either doing it with JUST SP2 installed, or with SP2 + all updates to January this year (the Update Pack).

OK, got a couple of screenshots for you guys. First up are temperatures and voltages, according to DFI's own "SmartGuardian" program:

Second, we've got MemSet 3.4, and what it reports as memory timings:

Everything looks correct to me... Opinions would be appreciated.

How is it working out?

Still getting all of the stupid errors. Still can't figure out what the hell is going on.

I ran Memtest-86 3.4, and everything checked out fine, I did a complete surface scan of the hard drive, and that was fine too... I dunno where to look.

Memory is usually the first place to look for general stability problems...mainly memory voltage.

This may be a stupid question, but did you set the voltage manually in BIOS?

It's definitely not a memory issue. The voltage is right (every monitoring program I've used says that the DIMM voltage is 1.88v). I tried installing with only 2GB of RAM, with no effect, and tried swapping the modules, with still no effects.

There's a couple more things I'm gonna try, but I might have to RMA my mobo.

Well, I think I figured out the issue. Right now, I've got almost everything installed (ALL of my apps, plus a couple of games) and am not having any issues.

What I *THINK* it was was the hard drive controller. The BIOS has options to set the hard drive in: ATA, AHCI, or RAID. When you set it to ATA like I did, the BIOS automatically enables "Legacy Mode". Well, apparently that was the problem. As disabling it, everything all of a sudden "works". I didn't think much of it at the time, but after exhausting all other ideas I had, I went over the BIOS with a fine-tooth comb, and took my chances with that setting. It worked, and I'm now on my way to a (FINALLY!) complete system.

Yeah, once I'm finished installing everything, and take an Acronis TrueImage backup of it (since it'll be all nice and purdy) I'll get to doing some FUN stuff on it (finally).

Make sure you get a good speaker setup for gaming!

Waiting for my 9800 GTX to arrive, then the build will be officially final, until I get either the Q9450 or Q9550.

I'll do benchmarks (FINALLY!) once the 9800 GTX gets here (should be here late this week or early next week). I'll also be reinstalling Vista.

Can one of you Mods move this to the Worklogs section, and rename it to something along the lines of "Fenuxx's Worklog" or whatever this has become? Much appreciated.
