Ya know, come to think of it, the same thing happened to me last time. Bought my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (nForce3 Ultra chipset) mobo, GeForce 6800 GT AGP videocard, and AMD64 3200+... I was happy being at (basically) the king of the hill for several months... Then PCI-E hit... And nForce4 hit... And I was sad.

At least it wouldn't be as bad, really at all, this time. I'd be able to save ALL of my computer's components. Just swap the mobo out and call it good. Add new videocard and uber processor, and I've got myself an UPGRAYEDD.

Can ya tell I'm trying to talk myself into this?
Thats almost exactly the same system I'm running now... DFI lanparty NF3 250GB eVGA 6800GT AMD64 3400+ It was king for a bit eh...

If you really can't wait, just get an Asus X38 with ddr2 and you're set.

Why? From the looks of it, with either the P5E or Maximus Formula, I'll have issues with the bottom PCI slot, which is where my Audigy 2 will go. Not putting it over the videocard... It would be just... Weird.

I was looking at the P5E-WS Professional, but I can't find a single damn review of it.
That's my issue.

If I could find an X38 board with a decent layout, I'd just do that and call it good, not even bother with upgrading to X48 when I do the CPU and videocard upgrade.

What baffles me, is that all P35 mobos seem to have MUCH better layouts than any X38 board. Being that X38 is supposed to be "high end" I just don't see why. It also seems like ASUS is having SERIOUS issues with mobo layout right now... Putting things in STUPID spots (for example, the Maximus Fomula and P5E, the 2nd PCI slot is ABOVE the frickin' videocard ).

Therein lies my conundrum...

Abit seems to have a decent layout. I agree that Asus seems to be employing feces throwing monkeys to design their boards...but that seems to be the same across the board. Why not do something like a NAS for data storage and then get a complete desktop system?

OK, what about these two:

Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 or the less expensive Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4

Opinions, comments?
The DQ6 doesn't seem to be as stable (OC, vdroop, FSB) in most of the reivews I've read, and further reading still has me wondering if Gigabyte has released a stable BIOS.

Well....there is the 780i although it's still premature as well

I think all you can really do is try to remain patient and a good board for you will come out in a bit

It all depends on how long my buddy wants to let me borrow his external hard drive that's currently holding the multitude of gigs of crap I have. Maybe I do need to get rid of some of this pr0n...

Why do you think I'm getting a 750GB drive? lol

You could always just get a NAS or throw together a system just to perform that function. It would be beneficial to you in the end no matter what and the money you were going to spend on an interim system you could save for when the board you are looking for comes out.

It's not JUST for pr0n. lol

I CAN just do what I said, and buy a P35 mobo now, along with the other parts I want, and when I use my Step-Up from eVGA, and (probably) buy a Penryn-based Quad-Core processor, I can get an X48 board or something... Even though I would PREFER not to do that... But, it looks like, right now, at least, that could be the option I've got... And it could possibly be the best option as well.

So - what was wrong with the pci slots on the max formula board?

With the case I'm getting, the bottom PCI slot has been known to interfere with the power supply cables and other cables in the case, due to there being very little room between the bottom of the board, and the second "partition" in in the case.

I've read about possibly needing extension cables for the 4-pin and 24-pin PSU connectors, which is no big deal, but I can't afford NOT having access to that bottom PCI slot. I'll need it for my Audigy 2. I could potentially put the card above the videocard in the second PCI slot, but, well, that's just stupid.

Also, I wouldn't go with the Maximus Formula anyways, I'd go with the P5E. Same board minus a few RAID features and the second GbE connection. Not worth it to me for a $30 price premium.

BTW, if I seemed like I'm rambling, it's because I think I had a few too many Captain Morgan and Coke's... Weeeee...

Also, I still haven't heard anything either way regarding the ASUS P5E-WS Professional. Thoughts anyone?
