Shut Down Issue

Hey, my laptop has a problem shutting down it appears. I have an Acer Aspire 5920G with Vista Home Premium. The computer functions completely fine, except upon shut down. When I go to shut the computer down (via the start menu), it goes through the normal shut down procedure (logging me off, shutting down, etc.), but never actually turns off. Only the screen turns off (or goes dark). The computer itself stays on (like all the buttons and lights remain on, and you can clearly hear that the PC/Hard Drive is still on).

This is weird because the computer actually does "shut down" (because, upon restart, it doesn't say that the computer was "shut down" improperly). The only way I can actually get the PC to "turn off"/completely shut down is by taking the battery out and/or removing the AC adapter. Anyway, I have no idea why this keeps happening, and it's really a strange problem (everything shutting down properly but the computer itself remaining on).

Please help if you have any idea or if you need me to provide more info. Thanks in advance.

Are you clicking on the power button at the bottom of the start menu, or are you going to the arrow and then selecting "Shut Down"?

I am going to the arrow and selecting "Shut Down". The power button only puts the computer into sleep mode or whatever.

My computer has only been doing this fairly recently (and very consistently recently). I can't think of any real changes that I've made recently though, especially ones that would have this kind of effect. My Acer and Windows "Power Plans" are set to "balanced", and I've restored all of the default settings on them (to no apparant avail).

You bring up a good point though Ghn, mine isn't related to his, but I didn't uninstall the old Dell wireless card or removed its driver before putting in the Intel Wireless card in...

I didn't remove and unsinstall the old driver for the DVD drive either >.< I just realized that...

Any ideas on how to find/remove those old drivers? Or what else could be causing the hang?

You can try to go into devices manager and remove the driver / device from there - then let Windows searching for appropriate driver for you.

cheers ...
