HP Pavilion dv6625 - Yes or no?

Hi all,

So, ANY recommendations would be great, thanks in advance.

I'm looking to buy a laptop/notebook (- same thing!), main uses are just basic (internet/Microsoft Word) plus watching movies from the net. (I don't need the snazziest of snazzy graphics - But good!).

I've found 'HP Pavilion dv6625 ' as a possible buy, but I've seen a few bad reviews on HP products. I had an HP printer once that was a nightmare from day 1, but maybe that was just random bad luck?!

Here are the specs of the laptop:

Price: 4,592 shekels here in Israel = $1,244 USD

Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 1.5GHz
2GB
160GB
15.4" WXGA High Definition Bright View
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
DVD Writer Double Layer LightScribe
WLAN 802.11 b/g
Windows Vista Home Premium

--- How does that sound?

If HP is a no no, then which brand should I look at?

Thanking you much!

Looks like a decent price. The x3100 isnt the best by any means for gaming though. Still, this should do you well for basic stuff

I've just finished 'setting up' a HP dx6000 (same family - very similar specs) for a friend's dad, and while it's video is a little on the weak side it's perfectly fine for the uses you state (same as my friend's dad's needs). I think, from what you've said, you'll be happy with that machine.

Edit: you'll see negative reviews of every company out there, don't let that dissuade you, unless you see a LOT of them.

i like these units BUT they have a lot of issues with the motherboards failing and causing you to lose video or the WiFi fails because its port its plugged into stops working because of the board failing. it CAN be repaired and i have done it before.

if HP has a new revision motherboard that has come out where the traces internally are ran different and some chips on the board are moved to another area where the board doesnt flex and cause it to fail, then i would NOT get any of the new HP notebooks until they fix this.

they even have a some what recall on these. if your unit fails and is out of the 1 year warranty, then they still repair it for up to a year. its on HP's message forum if you go see for yourself.

their one thread on the wifi failing has over 500 responses from users...

The dv6625 is not one of the dv6000 series affected by the wireless issue, so that should not be an issue (the affected models are from dv60XX - dv63XX).

For what you want to do, this should work just fine. The integrated graphics are not well suited for high end 3D gaming, but will work just fine for watching DVD's/videos, web surfing, and other normal applications.

I have the AMD version of this model and like it just fine.

What I do mention though is this: Be realistic in what it is...and is not! It is NOT a "rugged" notebook, built to take a beating, rather it is a very good "budget" notebook...good machine for the money, and used as such should give plenty of value. In the end, you do get what you pay for!
