macbook vs macbook pro

Thread Starter
which did you do and why?

I have one of each ...

The MacBook is perfect if you just want to use it for browsing, email, and basic apps - photo editing/organizing, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.

The MacBook Pro is better if you need more graphics power, or are into video editing and other more taxing applications, and want a bigger display. The styles of the two are also different ... the MacBook Pro is bigger, but thinner, so not really much difference when hauling around.

The MacBook Pro is the only real option if you plan to do any gaming on it ... the 8600GT video card works great for games like Guild Wars, WoW, and the like. Both are capable of running Windows using BootCamp (or a third party app).

Also a good idea to see what happens this week, given there may be an announcements on either new versions of the existing notebooks -- possibly even a new version (rumors about an ultra portable) at MacWorld.

Main difference is the Video Card and Screen size.. otherwise, the Macbook should be able to keep up fairly well with the Macbook Pro in similar programs such as Photoshop, as long as there's enough ram and such.

I bought a 15" and 17 highdef screen MBP. Love them both. The 17 is my DTR for my PC's and the 15 travrls with me on photo shoots/vacation etc. They both have 8600 video cards which plays games in bootcamp/xp just foien for as much as I play games anymore.

I bought my wife a 2.2 macbook and it is a AWESOME little machine. I don't care much fo rthe glossy screen thats on it, but she does. She plays sims2 on it with no issues and cod2.

BTW I am PC free now all Mac at home, runing windows xp for a tad longer mainly for work and thats it.

Went for the macbook pro as I love the build of it, also having the Graphics Card helps, and the 13" screen is just too small for me to find useful.

Whats more I got it for an absolute bargain as the store was closing down and I got it for €700 cheaper than normal making it the same as a similar MacBook, couldn't turn that down.
Also I cant stand the keyboard on my Girlfriends MacBook, although I find that in normal usage that theres not really much of a difference in performance.

Main difference is in graphics intinsive applications...

Also, integrated graphics in the Macbook Regular robs a bit of RAM from the main system RAM...though this is no biggie these since RAM is so cheap. So, just get more than plenty of RAM

Having a dedicate higher end graphics processor in the MBP, does that mean the battery life on the MB is much better for travelling purposes? And does that also mean that the MB generally will be cooler to the touch compared to the MBP?

Eh not really on either count. There is a lot more engineering that has to go into the MBP certainly, but I find them comparable between my MBP and my wife's MB.

I get 6 Hours w/ Min Brightness + Wifi on and music playing at 1/4 level from internal speakers. Thats on a macbook btw.

My macbook is hardly anything but cool... except on battery. On AC, it runs 50-65 deg C average, but on Battery, it can get as low as 30 deg C.

Same experience as seablade ... very little difference between the two wrt battery life. If anything, my MacBook Pro is a bit cooler, but then my MacBook is an earlier revision than the Pro.
