Upgrading from T2400 to T7200... Wow!

Ok.. I never thought a few hundred Mhz and a shrunken die would make that much of a difference, but when I took out the 1.83 Core duo and bought the T7200 2.0 engineering sample Merom, I was quite surprised how much of a difference I noticed! Since I'm using a 7950GTX my video card isn't much of a bottleneck (cept for games like Crysis) and watching cut scenes and movies and everything in general seems so much smoother with this new CPU. If anyone is considering upgrading, it is worth it if you have a decent GPU. This leads me to the conclusion that the CPU plays a much larger role in laptops than I originally thought.

Yes... I was an early adopter. Hated it at first, but then it kind of grew on me. The drivers are finally getting better. Why you ask?

Well, if you have XP you would'nt make much of a difference because your previous cpu is smoking fast with XP...

I wish my XPS had a duo core

There is no die shrink between T2400 and T7200, both are 65nm.

the CPU is the heart and soul of a computer. Its responsible for all calculations and processing.

I was saying XP is so fast with a Dual Core at 1.86. He would'nt notice much of a difference. He will notice alot more with Vista because it's CPU usage.

Personally I would take the C2D over the CD any day. so I say go with the T7200.

Just going from a Core Duo to a Core 2 Duo is a good jump in processing power

64 Bit OS will be nice once they become more main stream

Yeah thats right... I noticed the chip was actually bigger as well. Maybe it's the extra 2mb cache that helps vista run better. I don't know. Usually though it's the GPU thats the bottleneck. I'm almost temped to switch back to XP, but since the drivers are getting somewhat better and there is an SP1 coming out soon, maybe i'll just stick with Vista for now. It will be interesting to see if 64-bit actually takes off.

I did something similar too, I went from a T2600 to a T7400 both running at 2.17GHz and let me tell you a huge difference, since i'm wondering if i should goto a T7600 if it be woth the money? I have an oppertunity to sell my T7400 and use that money and another $75 and get a used T7600 Im debating on it, I wonder how much of a difference it would really make, I just have done so many upgrades from when i originally got this laptop all the way to even putting an XPS M170 lid cover, that my E1705 is basically a replica of a M1710 now in and out, i just worn out of taking the laptop apart again, also im trying to figure out a way to get the XPS lights on the lid to light up somehow.

SP1 for Vista helps with the speed a ton. I've been using all the RC versions, and so far all I can say "wow"!

Moving processors to the Core 2 Duo T7600g helped me out a ton in viewing and displaying Blu Ray Films.

i was gonna say when the OP posted that there must have been somthing wrong with his system because it shouldnt have made any noticeable difference. But now we can see that there was somthing wrong the hardware was running a defficiant bit of software this if true just shows how horrific vista is.
