Thoughts of Macbook Air?

Thread Starter
It seems the most persistant rumor has been a subnotebook from apple at this years macworld. There is also macbook air in google cache so it is likely that apple will roll out a new notebook. Me personaly I'm not too excited about this, I was hoping it would be something new but these things have already been done by Asus, Sony and HP. Not to mention I already own a macbook pro, what does this mean for me? I think my macbook pro is already really portable for the kind of power that it packs, now I need something smaller and less powerful for even more portability? I just dont see the need of rolling out a new smaller laptop when the macbook is already small as it is. Any thoughts?

only place i see for macbook air is a thinner macbook with a 15" screen, basicaly a MBP that sacrifices the videocard and uses the space/heat it no longer needs to be even thinner than the MBPs. Most people I know that have a MBP got it because of the screen and not the GPU. keep the proc/ram/drive specs the same as MB (or lower ..or put in some SSD storage even) and you have yourself a nice machine that would fit between the pricepoints of MBs and MBPs.

Just my thinking tho.

anybody know anyone looking for something smaller than the MB?

Actually the rumor changes a bit depending on where you are. To be honest, IMO it could be one of two things...

1) An ultraportable subnotebook, flash based, think eee
2) A smaller form factor MBP, think the 12-13" Powerbook of years past.

Personally the second option is what I really wanted when I got my MBP (15") so I won't be getting one if it happens merely because I just bought one.

Also personally I am not expecting to much shocking revelation out of Macworld this time around, and especially not to much to do with computers(again)

Wowser, Wowser, Wowser!!! VERY slick. Just watched the ad and guided tour. This is the perfect complement to a gaming desktop.

Unfortunately, work provides me a lil' Dell 420 portable, so I can't justify this one. Trust me, there is no comparison wrt style, that's for sure.

very cool and at the same time I'm not regretting my MacBook purchase. the Air would be great for professionals on the go. if anyone gets one of these i'd highly recommend a hard side sleeve/case to go with it. i'd be worried that it would warp too easily if any degree of pressure is put on the chassis.

Gotta agree with you, triadone. I'm quick to jump on new Apple products, but I just can't see myself giving up my 15" MacBook Pro. The Air sure is a sweet little thing, though.

Air is...well dumb, seems a glorified mix of the ipod and ipod touch to me..

Non user replaceable HD/Ram/battery makes it a big ipod with a keyboard.
I thought it great till I heard this..

Can anyone verify the claim that apple is using custom made intel chips in there?
They are using a chip that is significantly smaller than standard Intel C2D chips, even standard Penryn chips. There are conflicting reports on it being 45nm or not right now so I won't touch it.

To be honest for $1800 for a computer that lacks anything I need, I am not going to pick one up any time soon, sorry. While I would love for a laptop I could easily transport and am willing to give up some performance for it, that is just to little ability for way to much money(Only slightly cheaper than the MBP).

Battery is not replaceable, so it's a no go for me. Also, since there is no optical drive, how do you install software if you don't have another notebook? You can't, unless you buy the $99 drive..

I think Apple has a tendency to design all the functionality out of their machines....(SD/MC Reader anyone?).

Well to be honest supposedly you can share an optical drive from any PC or Mac, so not just a notebook. Would fit with standard file servers as well.

I think it looks cool and all. however this laptop wasn't made to be an only computer, you HAVE to have another. for that purpose I guess it's cool, however being so close to MBP price, I don't think it's the greatest deal. however great looking laptop. I'll have to see more before considering purchasing one.

I wonder will the Mac Book Pro price drop a bit because of this..that would be kewl.

How I feel..

Great system, I love the design and such. Getting rid of the optical drive for more battery space is great, I don't use my optical drive anyways, only during reinstall.

However, the system only allows 2GB ram.. which is not enough at all for me. I need at least 3GB these days, if not more. Unless theres an expansion in the newer series or more memory, I'm most likely staying away from that.

Secondly, the hard drive is WAY too small for me to use, so thats another reason I'd never get one right now. I need at least 160GB or higher on average.

Overall, I like the little system. Im willing to sacrface the CPU and GPU power, but not the ram or hard drive here.

The HD is a 1.8" (Think iPod) so performance and size both will absolutely stink on it. If you want decent performance at all with it you will need the SSD drive most likely, at which point you are dishing out some decent change for it.

Yes. The iPod's performance wise isn't the best. Furthermore, it is running a 4200RPM drive.

I can make do with the RAM, and the processor is good enough for me. But the 80GB hard drive is a little on the small side. However, if this MacBook functions primarily an extension of a desktop, it works. It certainly looks like it will be much easier to haul around airports. When I end going from terminal from terminal in Atlanta, and customs in Toronto, I can feel every once of my MacBook.

However, I was hoping that the new product would be more along the lines of a very large PDA.

This is very tempting to me. I currently use an HP TC4400 Tablet for my night courses and may have to send it in for repairs and not sure if I want to keep it afterwards. I like the tablet function, but most of my classes now have PDF's of the notes available so this Macbook Air might be a good replacement. I am use to not having the DVD with the tablet and even bought a USB DVD drive for it, and hardly use it. But would have to see the performance of the hard drive. Plus I tend to "misplace" itmes at times and would probably have nightmares about leaving it at work or at school if it is as thin and light that I think it would be.
