Oh , in addition , his hard drive is completely shot, wont even recognise it on booting, therefore i,m unable to create a recovery disk , and i already tried the 'order recovery disk ' option on hp's site but the link is dead

unfortunately HP/Compaq along with other companies no longer send restore cd/dvd's with the unit and the user who purchased the unit has to create them in Windows. if your son never did that, you will need to buy restore cd's or find a friend who has it.

yes , i had emailed support at hp, and thought i wouldnt get a reply, however this morning they mailed me , with a phone number i can call and obtain the recovery disks, so they're ordered now, thanks for that, and (unless i,m not supposed to) i,ll stick them on rapidshare if anyone else ever needs them , i,ll post the link on this thread when i get em, is there any reason i shouldnt make them available ?

think about it too. most people just toss them away and never find them again. plus every company out there in every type of business is trying to cut costs anyway they can and i think its fair for the user to have to create it. that way they can see how important it actually is to make these (you get a reminder from HP/Compaq while in Windows to make them)
and to keep them in a safe place.
plus right away you are testing the burning capability of your new system and see if the burning feature is even working. sometimes you get bad stuff out of the box.

Hi I have the same problem, just asking have you posted the link for the recovery disks? Because that would be a great healp to me.

I believe that (according to post #4) you need to contact HP and order the disks first before they would give you a link that can be used only by the buyers.

cheers ...
