Well since I have 2 Alienware Computers in the house I decided to find out who is the top Alien.

The Alien challengers:

Area-51 5550 Predator Tower
P4 3.4 OC'd to 3.924GHz
Liquid cooled processor
Nvidia 6800 Ultra 256MB RAM
406MHz Core 1.2GHz Memory

Area-51 M5750 17" Laptop
Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz or (4.32GHz processing power)
ATI X800 256MB RAM
452MHz Core & 504MHz Memory

The results: Desktop Laptop
3DMark012355229454
Laptop knocks the Desktop to the canvas

The results: Desktop Laptop
3DMark031410912874
Desktop comes back to take round 2

The results: Desktop Laptop
3DMark0559386381
Laptop once again takes the 3rd round

The results: Desktop Laptop
3DMark0628943000
Laptop takes the final round for a 3 out of 4 victory

Actually while gaming they are very similar which was what I wanted, so I'm very pleased with my portable Alien.
Note: The desktop might have done better with another 1GB of system memory.

I agree, I think that fact is going to really effect the direction the market and new designs take. Sure you will always have more powerful desktops, but for mainstream users and even for gamers - laptops meet their needs today.

I believe, he means, if you walk into an electronics store like Best Buy, Circuit City, Mac Store, etc and you select a decent laptop and you do the same for a desktop (not the price leader - sales gimic type). You will find the performance doing most any task will yield very similar performance or perceived results. Now in the gaming arena things are different. The performance potential with desktops is still much higher, but if you take a game like Crysis which is very demanding of hardware there are laptops out there that will play it very well, maybe not at the same level as a triple SLI Intel extreme processor equipped machine, but very playable experience nonetheless.

If you look at the original point of this thread you'll see what I mean. My AW desktop will still play most if not all games (not on Ulrtra High, etc.) that the majority of desktops will choke on and my Laptop is actually tested to be a better performer and it cost me less.

Yes, but one that mirrors your current desktop and the upcomming M17X comparison
