Ok im soon to be getting a notebook with wi-fi and now i need to and get a router, any suggestions? Keep in mind a few things 1) router/modem must be upstairs and i primarily live downstairs (stupid smart house tech), also the house is realitvely new so that means instead of wood house frame is metal eck! So what would you recommend? Also would a repeater help my situation out any?

Get the SMC2804WBRP-G
This model sports the PRISM chipset which had 200mW power out put, which means more range wirelessly.

Search for it and you will find good reviews.

I exchanged my Dlink G router since it had problems with sharing uploda bandwidthon the WAN side.

A side note that I used to work for SMC until I was laid off. If I am biased to this brand, the fact that they laid me off should be a deduction in points. :-)

Thanks for the tip. I'm about to get into wireless for the home, and for the first time, and was thinking of going Linksys. We just replaced our DSL with Cable Modem and are lovin' it. It's faster here! Although it's only a modem and not a router, I have it plugged into a 4-port hub on our home LAN and it's dispensing addresses to everyone. Looks like I could do the same with the SMC, presumably plug the modem into the WAN port, the ethernets into the other ports, and do wireless when roaming other rooms in the house. From the specs on that SMC I'd guess people will be parking on my back street to hook up!

EDIT: Speaking of pricey, the SMC is $109 at Microcenter, with a $30 rebate until April 25th.

I've had very good experience with my D-Link DI624 Xtreme G (104).
Installation was a snap, good coverage throughout the house. Got the combo package (unfortunately no longer available) with the matching PCMCIA card, great price and a rebate on both to boot. Just got the wireless print server. First one had problems (it had loose parts inside before I started installation) but second one was a snap to install as well.

The model I had problems with DI-524

I maintained a web server behind this router which gets light to moderate traffic spread throughout the day.

My connection is basic DSL 768 download /128 upload

I know I can't expect much from my upload speeds, but when the web server gets hit with a large file download from a client the DI-524 did not know how to allocate bandwidth "upload" to more than 1 connection. Which means that my web browsing, e-mail, and other Internet use is stopped until that file transfer is done. Ping to gateway while this transfer is ongoing is around 4,000 ms which is enough to stop all traffic.

My job while I worked with SMC was to find problems like this in upcoming new products and suggest a firmware fix to the developers. I called DLInk to advise and offer my help, but was disappointed to find that my offer to help was not taken seriously, and was even told to return the router without the added suggestion to get another model DLink.

I will give credit to DLink for maintaining a support crew not outsourced to another country. I believe that other companies who have recenty outsourced tech support and customer service jobs will eventually return.

I got this one last week as well as an SMC2536W-AG card for my 8887. Both be workin' swell. Have 3 computers and an Officejet printer hooked up via Ethernet and the USB Print Server port, and 2 of the 3 comps are lappies that go wireless around the house. The Print Server, despite being USB 1.1, prints fast enough. The router goes out a Comcast-Motorola Cable Modem, through which we're getting better speed than our previous Qwest-MSN DSL. We be wired (and wireless)!
