NVidia 8600M GT vs. NVidia 8700M GT...

Is there a large, noticeable difference in these 2 cards? The reason I'm asking is that I've found laptops near the same price that have one or the other, but the one with the 8700 are all 17' laptops, and I would prefer 15.4'.

Currently I wish to play Hellgate London and Warhammer Online once it is released. I also want to be capable of playing other games that may be released in the future. Will there ever be a point where I would be wishing I had the 8700 over the 8600 because I can't properly run a game?

Thanks.

Actually they are the same card. The 8700 is just a slightly overclocked 8600.

I think both cards suck! My "old" 7800 GTX is way better. I also have the 8600, and very unhappy!

Hmm, so then I wouldn't really miss having the 8700 over the 8600 then?

And yea I realize these cards won't perform as well in older games as cards from the 7000 series, but I'm planning on buying this laptop as a future investment for gaming, which means I'll want dx10. The 8800 is out of my price range right now, though I won't be buying the laptop any time soon so I may be able to wait until prices drop. However it's highly possible I'll crck and want to ditch my desktop for a laptop sooner than I expect, especially if I begin doing some traveling in the near future.

Performance class 2-7600 and x800 are bare minimums for gaming without degradation or running on mimimum settings-
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7600 GT for laptops. Depending on the used graphic memory and the clock speed, the performance is between the 7600 GT and 7900 GS video card. Gamers, who every time expect supreme frame rates, should wait for the 8800 series of NVidia.
475 MHz, 32 - unified, DX10 | 700 MHz, 128 Bit

Performance class 1-somewhat better then the x1900, and somewhat slower than the 7900 gtx
NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT is a video card and capable of DirectX 10. Technically, it has 32 Stream Processors like the 8600M GT, but the core-, shader- and memory clock is higher. Therefore the performance is somewhat above the 8600M GT.
625 MHz, 32 - unified, DX10 | 800 MHz, 128 Bit

Go with the 8700m GT

Uh, yeah, but you're not going to get the 7800 GTX in anything less than a 17" desktop replacement...assuming you're talking about the mobile part and not the desktop part.

From what I hear and see, there is a not a lot of difference between the 8600M GT and the 8700M GT (+/- 10%?). Just a bit of a clocking difference, not like the 8600M GS and 8600M GT, where there is a big difference (up to 50%)

If you can get the 8700M GT for almost the same price as the 8600M GT, then go for it. If there is more than $100 premium over it, I wouldn't recommend it.

Since you are waiting on an unreleased game, I would recommend waiting to see what it's like before getting a laptop specifically to play it. If you can't wait, get as much video power you can afford.
