i've just recently encountered a problem with my laptop. i've got the pc in my sig, and have never had issues before. but now when my dvd drive is accessing the drive, or burning a data disk, my computer slows down to a crawl! my mouse skips across the screen, any video i try and watch on any media player skips and stutters, the entire system just skips so to speak. i cant open folders, internet gets very slow as well. using i8kfangui my processor never gets to above 50 percent use, and my temps are all normal. task manager shows the same for processor usage with only around 52 processes running. anyone have any idea why this is going on? i'm gonna try and chat with dell about it, but i'm sure that they will tell me to reboot or do something stupid like that!

I purchased this Nook Color specifically because I was taking a very long trip to China and wanted to be able to read without carrying a ton of books. I also liked that it had email capability...

i would guess the DVD drive has gone into PIO mode and not DMA mode. You can remove the device and restart windows have windows reinstall the drive might fix it back to DMA mode also dell offer utility to force DMA mode when this type of thing happens.
Its my first guess because it seems very common with the cheap rubbish you pay dell for.
53 processes isnt bad you could probably run a million depending what the processes are actually doing and resources they use when i game on Team fortress 2 i kill all processes down to about 20 so only those needed and then before game launch i kill explorer too it really does make a difference at any resolution i dont know why but i have proven it to my self and 3dmark.

well i've been chatting with dell online. long story short i'm typing this on my wifes computer as dell has screwed mine up and i'm having to acronis restore the drive back. i'm not sure what dude did on that dell connect thing, but he unistalled the drive tweaked something inthe reg, then the computer would not see the drive, and the laptop crashed with explorer errors twice. i start telling him about all the problems i've had withthe laptop since purchase and asked him to tell me how many tech support issues were showing withmy service tag. he disconnected the dell connect, and never called back. that was after asking for my call back number in case of disconnect. he just left me there after screwing my laptop up! i use this for work and need the drive to function becasue of data archinves i do daily. so now i'm restoring my drive to yesterday (luckily i did a backup yesterday) and i'm stuck with the same issues. i'm going to have a not so pleaseant chat with dell later after dinner! i'm pissed!
