Need Input - Laptop Bag Design

All cooperation would be helpful!

I am a senior design student looking at designing a soft laptop case for on-the-go laptop users. I have some ideas going already but any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have compiled this short survey for my research listed below. You can either post responses in this thread, private message me, or send an email to cmweed@bellsouth.net

Cannot respond as it will interfere with my existing patents and designs of laptop bags and accessories.

Briefcase style soft cloth case.

How often is your laptop transported?

What percent of the time do you use your case while transporting your laptop?
50%

What do you like about your current laptop case?
Has enough pockets to carry all accesories, woud probably protect the laptop if dropped.

What do you dislike about your current laptop case?
Heavy, bulky

What are the top 3 things you carry with your laptop? cell phone, textbooks/folders/spiral notebooks, wallet

Do you own a case for your laptop? yes

If so, please describe what type of case it is: Wenger Rhea

How often is your laptop transported? every weekday when classes are in session

What percent of the time do you use your case while transporting your laptop? 100%

What do you like about your current laptop case? It provides ample protection for my laptop from other items in the case, and has convenient storage for small items in the front and notebooks in two separate areas. It also looks nice.

What do you dislike about your current laptop case? The zipper teeth can potentially scratch the laptop on the sides, because of the shape of the opening. I would prefer to have a separate zipper opening for the laptop pocket, instead of that pocket being a subsection of the main part of teh case. Because of the wedge design, I cannot fit a large textbook in there along with my laptop and a notebook or two without having trouble zipping it up.

How often do you use your laptop? For about 12-15 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What are the top 3 things you carry with your laptop? The giant power brick, a lot of cables, and some burnable DVD/CD's

Do you own a case for your laptop? Yes

If so, please describe what type of case it is: Soft case that was purchased along with my E1705 from Dell. It has a couple of small zippered pockets here and there, and a large front pocket where everything else goes.

How often is your laptop transported? Back and forth to my semi truck on the weekends, and around town on the weekends at home. During the week though, its not in the case at all.

What percent of the time do you use your case while transporting your laptop? 100% of the time.

What do you like about your current laptop case? Anymore? Not much. It outgrew its usefulness a long time ago... I guess the padded notebook sleeve that is part of the bag is the best feature it has.

What do you dislike about your current laptop case? Pretty much all of it now. It doesn't have enough places to organize cables and PCMCIA/Expresscards... Pens and pencils or markers don't stay in there little provisions anymore... Not enough places to safely store media discs... My power brick takes up the whole accessory pocket on the front, so there isn't much room for the other things... My webcam has no home in it...


I guess that about covers it there.

I have two

If so, please describe what type of case it is:

One of them is a Targus shoulder bag, the other is a Targus back pack.

How often is your laptop transported?

A lot!

What percent of the time do you use your case while transporting your laptop?


All the time!

What do you like about your current laptop case?

Both serve different purposes, the backpack is for going to someones house, the bag is general use.

What do you dislike about your current laptop case?

The shoulder bag doesn’t have much room.

Wireless mouse, USB memory stick, flash cards (SD and CompactFlash), besides AC adapter, of course.

Do you own a case for your laptop?
Yes.

Black leather briefcase.

How often is your laptop transported?
In-home: almost daily. Other: Lately, each 15 days I guess.

What percent of the time do you use your case while transporting your laptop?
Each 15 days? (see above)

What do you like about your current laptop case?
Black leather feels good.

What do you dislike about your current laptop case?
A lot of things. Lack of dedicated compartments (CD/DVD, flash cards, USB sticks), mouse is exception (it has). Also it screams 'steal this notebook'. Good thing I don't walk around with it (go to very specific/safe places). Perhaps I will buy a good bag+sleeve when I start traveling more with it (probably soon).

What do you like about your current laptop case? Holds the laptop vertically (side down), relatively flat, holds a reasonable amount of crap, double flap, lightweight, sturdy.
