XPSM1330, XP, Taskbar & Quick Launch Icons

Hi folks.

I am really hoping that you can help resolve a problem that is driving me mad!

The problem is that the Quick Launch icons on my Taskbar frequently take several seconds to appear and whilst they are 'loading' a simply get a white block on the Taskbar (see image). During this delay (3 - 5 seconds) waiting for the Quick Launch icons to appear Windows is pretty unresponsive.

I am using Windows XP SP2, on a Dell XPS M1330 laptop. The laptop is running a 2.2 GHz dual core processor and 4GB of RAM so processing power and memory shouldn't be the cause.

I have a Quick Launch toolbar on my Taskbar. I have my Taskbar set to auto-hide. And the Taskbar is effectively double height (so that I have my Quick Launch icons visible on the top row and open windows / applications on the bottom row).

Please see the screen shot image for an example of what I am describing:

(My Desktop is set to have no image and be plain white, btw!)

Any thoughts, solutions, suggestions or feedback to get the Quick Launch toolbar displaying correctly would be VERY much appreciated!

(Obviously, I am able to remove the Quick Launch toolbar in order to solve this problem; however I would rather not have to do that).

Many thanks.

try checking your video card driver.. check the dell site if theres a new driver, or try using another video card driver for your card.

Hi duderacked,

Thanks for the reply.

I have only just had my motherboard replaced by Dell due to a video card / display problem. At this same time I downloaded the latest drivers from Dell.

However, this problem occured prior to the replacement mother board and is still occuring now.

Thanks anyway though.

Quick launch Icons are nothing more than shortcuts like on your desktop, but you probably have something loading at startup that sits on your tray section by your clock that is slowing the redraw of the quick launch icons. I would check your ms config and see what you have at startup and remove any un needed apps that load a tray icon by your clock. The evidence of this is the fact that Windows is pretty unresponsive and that is not a characteristic or function of a shortcut to lag your system loading. But apps that launch at start up and also include some tray app do this. I would look into this, you can tell you have a lot of tray apps too because your tray section even has the arrow to show hidden icons.

I have seen this cause similar slow QL display.

eclypse3demons,

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have carefully gone through all system tray icons and programs, disabling any that are not essential. I now have only 6 running in the system tray at startup - Windows Desktop Search, NOD32 anti-virus, ZoneAlarm Pro firewall, Dell QuickSet utility, Microsoft OneNote tray icon & Windows Live Messenger. I do require the use of all of these programs, and have therefore left them enabled.

The problem has still occured unfortunately.

It appears to do it a little less frequently, but as the problem is intermittent anyway, this might just be coincidence - as you would imagine that if that were in fact the cause of the problem it wouldn't simply have stopped doing it.

Thanks for the reply though - much appreciated.
