I am contemplating either of these machines from Dell. I like the fact they both have the Intel Dou Core2 processors. ALso they come loaded with XP. But, they are also Vista-ready. I looked at the owners manuals for each and found that the two units are almost identical. Any comments on which might be better?

I just looked at the specs for both (Dell website, Support, Manuals, Specifications). Absolutely identical physical dimensions between the two. There are differences in the available processors though:
Vostro 1500:
Intel Celeron M540 (1.86 Ghz, !M L2 Cache, 533 Mhz FSB)
Intel® Celeron M® M550 (2.0GHz, 1M L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5270 (1.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5470 (1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7250 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7700 (2.4GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
Inspiron 1520:
Intel® Pentium® Dual Core T2330 (1.6GHz/533Mhz FSB/1MB cache)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5450 (1.66GHz/667Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5550 (1.83GHz/667Mhz FSB/2MB cache)

I'm really happy with my 1520, as long as I don't play CoD 4. It has the Core 2 Duo T7300 CPU and the 8600M GT. It does everything very well, except performance is a little lacking on shooters. I'd look at the Dell Outlet and you can find a steal of a deal on a 1520 with similar options as in my sig for $1000.00 or less. The only issue is that you'd have to install XP if you don't like Vista. The bonus is that you'd have Vista to install when you're ready.

The vostro is a little bit thinner, looks wise its more business. As far as performance they are essentially the same thing, but I think the Vostro is cheaper through Dells small business site (No you dont really need to be a business =) )
I am not sure out the inspiron but in my experiance there are things you do not get with them, detailed manuals, and software by default (You have to pay for the CDs).
I do not think you get any real OS options either its just Vista I think. The Vostro offers both. XP/Vista
I paid very little for mine.

Okay folks. I put the spec sheets (downloaded from Dell Support) for the Vostro 1500 and Inspiron 1520 side by side. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE EXCEPT THE CHIPSETS. EVERYTHING ELSE IS EXACTLY IDENTICAL.
And, the Dell site also still offers Windows XP Home and Pro in the Inspiron 1520 (not sure how long that will last). So, if I can't find a good deal in the Outlet, I'm going with the one that is cheapest to build.
