Cooling mods I9300, More CFM

I'm curious if anyone knows of a higher capacity fan or fans for the gpu and cpu heatsinks in an I9300/xps2.. I got to wondering if there are same size fans which move more air, maybe they spin faster, higher RPMs.. Also, would cutting slots or a hole in the left side of the cpu/gpu heatsink fan help or harm that side..? Anyone played with this, or experimented? My 7800gtx GPU idles at near 60degrees when fan control is set to auto.. scary.

Take the heatsink off the 7800GTX and apply some AS5 to that sucker. Should get those temps much closer to 50C, also keeping the back part of the laptop elevated above the surface it's laying on will help with air circulation a lot. I normally just find a pen, or bottle cap, memory card, or something about 1/4 - 1/2" thick to raise the back when I play games that stress the GPU.

I've thought about cutting some additional slots on the right side of the top of the laptop. If you remove the top part of the laptop, you'll see it has slits cut in the top part for the fan, but when you put the top part that clips on back on, it coves them. I thought about cutting holes to match the ones under it, for better air circulation.

60 C is very hot idle

Yeah, I want to say I am in the 45C range idle and I have a hot card. This is on a m170 with both fans on slow.

If in auto, your fans come off I could see it. If not done already, a good cleaning is probably a great place to start.

Before i installed the 7800 i did a deep cleaning, applied as5 to cpu and gpu, and i never play a game without being propped up. Those are standard procedures. I just need to build a cooling mod. More brainstorming.

Ambient room temperature has a lot to do with it also. What is the room temperature of the room the laptop is in?

My room temps about 65 or less. Im idling about 48 now.

I have a suggestion. It's not really an internal mod. Using a laptop cooler. I know there is a lot of debate as to their effectiveness. I personally see about a 3-5 degrees reduction in my temps. Cleaning my system was by far the most effective but I see you've already cleaned yours.

Yea I've never looked into those, but they keep being made for something, I'll probably check it out, but yea cleaning this thing out really helped. I guess I could jsut play outside with an extension cord in the snow, I wonder how high I could overclock it, seeing here in NY its like 10 degrees. :]

Did you attempt tp Lap the Heatsink surfaces at all? It's not easy because of their size and configuration, but you can improve the surface usng wet / dry Auto Sandpaper in 800/1000/1500/2000 grits. Just mount it on a small block, and do it under a small stream of water to wash away the particles. I was able to get both of my coolers to a near mirror finish.

And I keep a can of Air close by to blow it out every now and then, works great!
