spill

My wife spilled her entire drink on the laptop. When this happens, do you generally replace the MB only, or do the processor, memory, etc.. have to get replaced too?

That one's hard to predict; it depends on just what was short-circuited (if anything). This would take some extra work by a repair tech, therefore usually pretty much they'll simply try the replace-parts-until-it-works approach.

Was the laptop on when this happened and what was the drink, water only or a softdink?
If it wasn't on, I'd unplug it, remove the battery, and the memory, and take it apart and use a hairdryer (not on hottest setting) to blow any water out and off the circuit boards. Then set it aside for about a week in a very dry warm area if possible before reassembly to try it. If it was on, I'd try todo that also. If the drink was anything other than water, like a softdrink maybe try some alchohol on cotton to dab-out the residues. Can't hurt to try anyway. hth

It was juice watered down with water... I feel no risidue and the computer was on for a minute after the spill. Then I turned it off, and it stayed that way

Well, if you are feeling ambitious enough... try running to your local electronics store and buy a can of pressurized electronics cleaner. Its a spray on, fast drying solvent that will clean and dry electronics components quickly. You should not put power to the system again till you are absolutely SURE nothing has any water or stickiness left... You may get lucky... especially if it didn't saturate into the moving components such as fans and your HDD. Pull it all apart and clean it as thoroughly as you can. If it didn't short out before, there is a good chance its still recoverable. Just clean EVERYTHING you can. Good luck!

Rice? Haven't heard that one before... but i see no reason why it wouldn't work. If you try that, let us know
