Clean os install without PQService/backup/...

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I have an Acer Travelmate 6460 with Windows XP on it. I want to format my harddisk and put a Vista Business on it (no OEM).
With that format I mean complete one, including the PQService partition from Acer.
Basically I want to have an 'Acer clean' laptop in the end (I only want the drivers for the hardware, and the downloads to make the soft keys working).
Now first of all i can not delete the PQService partition (not in Windows, not in the Vista installation program after booting from dvd). That made me curious and searched the internet.
Now I've read that it is possible that after deleting the PQservice partition, you loose the MBR and can not boot anymore. I don't want to take that risk because I do not want to loose many time during working hours.
I'm a software developer, knows a fair bit of hardware but I really like some advice of some 'manual' of what to do to accomplish what I want. (If that is possible).
I've searched this forum but did not really found what I'm looking for. Can someone help my out, or give an url where I can find the solution to my problem?

Thanks in advance!

i would personally just dual boot the comp first to be sure that it functions 100% under vista before zapping out the other partition

u might be the first in this particular model, so, do come back and share the how-to if u decide to go clean on the install

cheers ...

Clean install without pqservice? HELP!

I don't get what all the fuss is about keeping pqservice. I recently bought a new Dell XPS M1530 and immediately wiped the drive and installed a new copy of XP-PRO (it came with Vista). I had people look at me in horror when I told them I had wiped the drive. Well, I didn't know any better! Bottom line is that as soon as I found all the correct drivers (not difficult) the computer works great, has no problems, and I'm still wondering why pqservice is such a sacred entity. I'm now looking at partitioning the drive in my new Acer AOA 150 netbook and I'm again told to make sure I don't mess with pqservice. Is it all about the device drivers? A standard partitioning doesn't mess with the drivers anyway, does it?

I had a really good, long rant about this before I deleted it.

But, to sum it up. Save yourself some trouble and keep the factory partition. It is usually just a few jigabits [sic] and comes in handy if you ever have software issues.

You convinced me. At least I have the chance to keep it intact on this computer!

Thanks!
