As the title says, I may getting this laptop soon. I was considering an Extrensa 5420 but this is same price and specs really, but in a 14". So here is a few things I want to know also.
  • Does it have Bluetooth?
  • How well does the latch-less design work?
  • How easy is it to clean the vents out?
  • What is the highest the processor temperature has gotten for you?
  • What is the battery life like and any ways to increase it?
  • Is the 12 cell battery worth 130?
  • Is the remote Bluetooth?
  • How is the graphics card for minor gaming?

I have the 15.4" screen version of this notebook, with the same cpu/hard drive/gpu/battery, etc.

No Bluetooth

The latch-less design works just fine to me

Vents are easy enough to clean

Don't bother monitoring the CPU temps, but it runs fairly cool, cooler than some of the earlier Turions did...heat has been no issue for me.

Battery life is average for a 6cell, betwwen just over 2hrs to 2-1/2 or so. Not great not terrible. Obviously the 12 cell will greatly improve that, and $130 is not unreasonable, though keep in mind that it will "bulk up" the notebook somewhat.

The 7150M is of course a mobile graphics solution, good for day to day stuff inclusing videos/dvds, not much of a gaming gpu. You can p;ay a few things on "relaxed" settings, but it is not a 3D gaming gpu

Ah thanks. But what does the remote use if not Bluetooth? I don't plan on playing much games as I have a PS3 and a PSP Slim.

I do know first hand how hot the Turion can get. My Acer has hit 70C before!

The remote is just standard IR, not Bluetooth.

Yep, I have heard that the earlier Turions could run a bit "toasty". Supposedly, the newer models pretty much starting out at the TL 58, run cooler.

I am not too sure about all of that, but I can tell you that my Pavillion runs pretty cool...normally very cool, but even when I am pushing it a bit, it has never gotten all that warm. My wife's Sony Vaio, a few years old, with the original Intel Centrino CPU runs noticeably warmer.

Ah, sounds good. How are restore disks handled? Does the power jack glow blue? Does the jack get in the way when on lap or desk?

all DV2/6/9s glow blue.

You make your recovery disks...the new systems (that typically have Norton 08) require 3 discs, older ones require 2. I prefer jacks in the back, but they don't get in the way of anything.

The recovery disk deal is the same as in many/most now days: There is a recovery partition on the hard drive that you can burn a recovery disk set from. It is limited to ONE time (although that can be gotten around), so pick your media carefully...in other words, do you want a bunch of CDs, 2 standard DVDs, or one double-layer DVD to burn your recovery info to?

I DO recommend making a recovery set as soon as you do the initial set-up of your laptop! Many folks "wait until later", which is typicallt "too late!"

You can, or course, delete the recovery partition after, but I would not. It is easiest and quickest to do a recovery through the partition...if I need extra HD space, well that's why they make external drives!

The power jack does glow blue.

The jack does not get in my way at all, but I must say that this is a matter of how/where you use your notebook. I do not have it plugged in when it is on my lap, so that is not an issue...On my desk, my current set up works well with the jack being on the right side of the notebook, but that may not be equally convenient for everybody. I really prefer not having any connectors on the back of my notebooks.

Hey thanks everyone. I will probably use CD-R since I have a ton of Sony ones. One question: If it fails to burn properly, will it give me another chance?

Not 100% sure on this, but I believe that the answer to that is "no". I would absolutely make sure that I was using reliable medium for this. I used 2 sandard DVD-Rs for mine, but I see no problem using CDs aside of the minor hassle of having more CDs to keep track of and swap in and out (6, I believe).

BTW, not that this should happen, but yes, if you can not successfully burn recovery disks, or should yours get lost...or simply "bite the dust", you can order a set from HP.

Well, I will probably use a DVD then. I think my dad has some Memorex or TDK ones. I will make more then 1 set to be on the safe side.

6? no...CDs comes up as about 14 discs. DVDR is the way to go.

Ah. How many DVD will I need? Also: How bad is the crap ware?
assume 3.

not great, but fairly simple to uninstall.
Took me 2 normal DVD Rs, no biggie.

There is some of the obligatory "crap-ware" but really not so much. MS Officce Home and Student (typical "trial" ware), an active version of MS Works, Vongo, trial version of Norton's, Roxio "lite", and a few of HP's utilities (can be OK for some, but not really needed)

Once I got accustomed to Vista, I grew to like it just fine! I did not, and would not put it on an older single core P4 system, like my 2.6ghz desktop, but Vista runs just fine on the dual/multi core systems that it was meant to be paired with.

Yeah people should give Vista a little more respect. I will say I like Linux a lot but I will use Windows.
