|Today the world's second-largest hard drive manufacturer, Western Digital has proudly announced that it has started shipping new 3.5-inch Caviar drives equipped with its latest 320 GB-per platter technology. According to the company, the new drives are proof of it providing the "highest areal densities" but somehow this didn't sound right to us. 320 GB platters are certainly 'big' but as it turns out one little company called Samsung has been playing around with 334GB platters and making drives out of them since last year.
Political correctness aside, Western Digital is now shipping the first 3.5" drive to use the technology - a 320GB model. As the plan goes, the beefy platters will start to be included in WD's desktop, enterprise, CE and external hard drive product lines.
