Hey pretzelx, I've been having similar problems with my e1705 (though not nearly as bad or as long as you've been having them). I get random lines across the screen, blue screens, artifacts.
First visit, the dell technician replaced my video card.
Second visit, video card, lcd, motherboard
Third, sent it in to the repair depot (they're the most incompetent fools I've seen, they simply replaced my vid card AGAIN)
I finally told them after going through this for a month, I just wanted a system replacement. Its been about a week now that I've been waiting. I called tech support up again today, and they informed me that it could take 21 days. I tried to push them to speed up the process, but they only said that they would send an email to try to expidite my pending system replacement request.
I've also tried asking them what system I'll be receiving. Until today, I've just been told "equal or better," but the rep I talked to today told me I would probably be getting a refurbished e1705 with an updated video card (i had the 7800 go). She said that she would give me a status update on my pending replacement request on thursday.
I wouldn't mind leveraging support to get me a 1730
, but I just don't know how to go about it from this point.
Any tips pretzel, mcfly, or the others who've had similar experience? Congrats on your systems btw, I'm very jealous

Well the DVI port is key because they can't down grade you to a 1720 so DVI eliminates that. (Even though they may try to send one like they did me and McFly, dont accept it) If they are already agreeing to replace the system the hardest part is done. Just don't accept the 1720 and demand a DVI port. You should end up with a m1730. I don't know about the SLI I got lucky and McFly's rep was really good about it too. I dont know what to say about that. But if you're coming from the 7800go, 1x 8700gt m is quite a difference.
If they haven't said yay or nay to the replacement yet, they tried to convince me to simply repair, literally 3 days after it just got back from the depot. So I wrote I nice long, threatening letter to them. How pissed off I was with all the repairs and the quality of the product. Also, they claim it doesnt matter but I posted stories from the Dell forums about people who got replacements and upgrades.
Its hard to say in your situation, I've had mine for 2 years, the day it came back from the depot, and defective, there was 364 days in my warranty left. So I snapped and decided that I cannot take no for an answer this time. My history was a little more extreme than yours, but I might have had mine longer, I'm not sure.

Yeah like pretzel said just push for that DVI port. They really shouldnt have many E1705 or M1710s left so if all goes well you should get the M1730 like we did. Just keep checking your dell account online cause once a system is chosen for you it will show up as an order in production like it did for me. as long as they are still building it you will have leverage. if it ships it will be a lot harder to get what you want. the moment you see any system in production, which most likely will be a 1720, call them up and be like what the heck, I must have DVI for work, school, or just the simple fact that you bought a laptop with dvi and you expect to get a replacement that has dvi as well. if that person doesnt handle it just call back until you get someone that will or ask for a manager. good luck.

thanks for all the help guys, hopefully I can play this well =). I'm suppose to be getting a call from a rep tomorrow on my status, I'll make sure and let ya'll know how things go.
On a side note, how are you're M1730's working out? I read about someone's experience/issues with the M1730. Does it really have these problems with the batter and SLI?
"...The current M1730 has major issues and already I have had the motherboard, power supply, and battery replaced. The Blu-Ray scratches the dvds and the first replacement they sent was DOA. I am trying to test the second Blu-ray, but my laptop has been crashing and locking up. I've worked with a Sr. Dell Executive Technician for 5 days. Here are my current unresolved issues:
The laptop power cord can be loosened by moving the power cord or the laptop. When this happens, the laptop switches to battery.
When the laptop is running on battery, it freezes and locks up. This happens every time, not just occasionally.
When I plug the laptop back in from running on Battery it bluescreens or freezes.
The SLI drivers are poor and do not work. Dell has 2 drivers, one production and one beta. The production driver causes the laptop to freeze when Freecell is started. Performance at high resolutions is worse than previous generation laptops. The beta driver fixes some problems but the driver readily crashes when switching to SLI.
When cold booting from the battery the laptop is more stable, but cannot play DVDs, video, and is very slow to respond (like a 400Mhz Celeron)
I've rebuilt the laptop more than a dozen times with various driver configurations..."

My laptop should be here tomorrow. I'll post to let everyone know how its working after I get it all formatted and updated and some games installed.
I went out and bought UT3 and COD4 for some fresh online action. I'll do some benchmarks.
How do I benchmark COD4?
And UT3, I assume is like UT2004, just run the benchmark app.
