4gb ram in 9400

Hey guys,

Not the usual can it support it question.. cause i know it should! And i know it will only use 3.25, thats cool, doesnt matter its so cheap these days.

BUT

I cant get the 2 x 2gb to both work in this thing? Either 2gb sticks work fine in either dimm slot, and i can get a 1gb and a 2gb working together in either configuration, but i cannot for the life of me get the pc to boot with both 2gb's in it?! The caps lock light etc just flash?
Its got the latest bios, A09, so does anyone have any ideas why it doesnt work?
I thought it might have been the stick of ram, so im actually on my 3rd stick of 2gb and both current sticks are tested, and DO work.

??
Thanks!

Seems likely to me that your motherboard is broken or something, plenty of people have 2gb x 2 ram configs without the issues happening, so I guess possibly one of the ram slots is fubar'd

I have 4 gigs in mine, and no problem at all here

I have seen this happen before, it can be the MB or the Ram.

If you can, get the memory replaced, and possibly a different brand

Are both sticks of the same make and speed ?

If not then:
What could be the issue with you is the Dual Channel.
It maybe trying to enable as the BIOS sees 2 x 2GB sticks.
But if they are of different brands then they may have slightly different timing.
The reason also why each stick works seperately, but not together.
Now there is no way of turning Dual channel off to test this

If yes:
then there could be a MB issue.

Having the memory in the same pairs is the best way to go.

identical memory, but it just will not work with 2 x 2gb sticks
tried 3 different 2gb sticks, no go.
any combination of 1gb + 2gb will work but not 2gb + 2gb.

That is really weird

The memory slot maybe faulty or dirty, strange that 1GB works but 2GB not.

Does it work with 1GB + 2GB and 2GB + 1GB, try the 2GB in both slots with the 1GB in the other.

yup! sure does. sometimes it wont, but if it move them around a few times it starts working, weirdest thing ive ever seen!
if it stops working it takes a few mins of swapping to get them going again (1+2) but for the life of me cant get 2+2 working. just wont post, the numlock and caps lock lights just flash on and off..

Could there be something marginal, electrically? It sure would be nice to try some ground bounce tests on each stick stick separately, in each slot...

Same would go for 2GB + 1GB setup...

Sounds like a broken RAM slot holder.
Make sure the sticks are in really well.

You may have to face the 3GB fact, no loss as the MB can't handle more than 3.25GB anyway.
