Aside from the CPU, why do these laptops have the same price?

I can also add $100 to the 1500 and get the 1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB which is better than the D820.

But compare the specs.

THanks

The lat is a better buy with that vid card.

The Latitude 820 is an older (already replaced by the 830 which is about to be replaced later this year) model. The main difference is that Intel has changed the bus speeds and pin configuration on the newer motherboards. The latitude is better built and lighter with a better warranty. The Vostro has better multimedia (memory card reader, Windowsless media playback) but by getting the X3100 instead of the Geforce 8400 or 8600, is slower than the Latitude with the 120M (which is equal to a Geforce 7400). The Latitude also has a 3 year warranty rather than the vostro's 1 year.

I've owned both of them, deciding to get a Vostro 1500 last august for the Geforce 8600 and bargain price (I sold the Latitude for 1100 with the nvs120 compared to the 900 paid for the Vostro 1500 with the 8600).

To make the comparision better, upgrade the Vostro to the 8400, upgrade the Latitude to the DVD burner and the 120GB hard drive and you have 680 vs 700 with neither of them crippled.

The latitude is better built by a reasonable margin, has much better surface finish, can use the d-dock or port replicator, have a second [pata] hard drive, like rp3 says,is thinner and lighter, has touchpoint ,better battery life,9 cell battery doesn't stick out the back.

The latitude is much better for a portable computer imo, mostly because of the build quality [epecially the lid]and battery life [also can have second optical bay battery]....the truth is....if the vostro 1500 hadn't had the 8600GT option,I wouldn't have even looked at it over the current latitude/precision.

I posted some comparison pictures [albeit poor] between my precision and vostro http://www.notebookforums.com/thread203468.html
The M65 is the same thing as the latitude D820/830 apart from a bit of trim and the openGL graphics.

I have the vostro and for the money its more than worth it, and can do anything the lat can do, and vice versa, at this point its just different cases. Especially when you put in similar options. =)

if the vostro can do everything the lat can do, and the lat can do everythign the vostro can do, how is the vostro "more than worth it"?

you are taking my post litterally just saying that basically both machines specc'd the same are pretty much the same machine, just different looks.

Other than that the only "real" difference is for some reason Dell did not include a docking option for the vostro ?? and that would be in my mind the only deciding factor which machine to buy based on need to dock as the latitude has it, otherwise they are the same machine.

"More than worth it" is in reference to the very cheap price. I was expecting less than what I got with the vostro, its faster than my E-1705 was (CD1).....

I think the lat looks a bit more like business than the Vostro does though not that the Vostro is all that flashy either =)
