Dell are replacing my 9400 (e1705) with a 1720, help please...

Hi,

I have a high end speced Inspiron 9400:

2.13 core 2 duo, 2gig ram, 100gig 7200 rpm hd, 1920x1600 true life screen, 7800go gfx which I purchased in June 2006. I am in the UK so this cost me £1100 from the Dell outlet.

During December 2007 it has had 4 service calls where the motherboard, graphics card, and lcd have been changed 4 times with the same fault occurring (lines on lcd).

Dell have kindly agreed at my request to swap the laptop for a new 9400, but as the 9400 is no longer in production Dell said they will give me a similar spec 1720 instead, which was nice of them and I agreed. Here is the spec for the 1720:

2.2gig cpu, 2gig ram, 160 5400rpm hd, 8600 gfx, 1920x1600 lcd.

All seemed fine but slower hd which I can live with (just about).

I then started doing some research and discovered the 8600 is slower than the 7800 I had? and the laptop has no DVI port! I used to connect the 9400 to my external montior and sometimes my HD TV using the DVI and will miss it dearly on the 1720.

Would it be unreasonable for me to ask for a higher spec machine over the 1720?

Thanks.

yeah if you would have pushed for the DVI port you would have gotten an XPS M1730. They tried to send me a 1720 and I told them I had to have the DVI port and I got a 1730. Also the 8600 is no match for the 7800GTX. If I were you I would call right away and complain and get them to cancel that order and get them to send you a M1730. GL.

Hi Guys, I spoke to Dell and they said sorry can't do anything now because you already agreed to an 1720. Even though the laptop is still in pre-production and won't ship until 20 Feb, they won't cancel the order :-(

Call them back and talk to another rep, and keep calling until they do something about it!

No, you still have a chance to get something much better. Call every single day and complain. Tell them you had no idea when you agreed to a 1720 that this laptop had no dvi port and it is required for your work/school

And tell them the 8600 is nt even close to the performance of the 7800GTX

You also have to realize that Dell will not replace all E1705's to an XPS.

GL anyways.

Clarification, dell already gave me a 1720 with the 8600M GT and it has many problems. I am sure dell will fix the stuff eventually, but my question is; they have offered to give me a 9400 with the nvidia 7900GS due to the lack of DVI port.

Which is a better gaming machine for the next two years? The 9400 is my guess, but I am not the the bees knees of computing, but as the names states...an XpsWannaBe :-)

this thread is very old, so you may not get a decent answer. the dvi argument doesn't work anymore, they just give you an adapter. as i suggested in another thread, the bus speed of the gpu is the only argument you need, that and allot of time

Thank you.

They told me to buy my own??

IF you do decide to go with the 9400 make sure you have the warranty to go with it

the 79xx seriers cards - though faster than the 8600, are failing like crazy. and some have had to wait for weeks for a replacement GPU

of course they did, but it is in the warranty that they replace everything the same or better, so you having to buy something is wrong

Ok, so I had a long talk with the Sr. Sr. Customer service guy. He agrees that the computer is a down grade but says the legal department does not agree.
Their argument is that I orginally received a Raedion x300 128mb and that though I had ordered the 6900 Ultra from dell the warranty does not cover the upgraded card.
Is that true?

My other question is that this computer can not have an upgraded card. It is basically solid state. The 9300 could take many different video cards. So the lack of diversity is a limitation. Like buying a weedeater with a single head or the one I have has multiple attachments.

All suggestions welcome.

oh, yeah... it only covers what was bought in your original machine

i think you got what you are going to get unfortunately

I just got dell to agree to replace my high-end 9400 as well. It has had many bad graphics cards, and fans/motherboard/ram/heatsink have also been replaced.

I got the confirmation on the phone from Dell about 5 hours ago, can I also expect the 1720 with a 8600M GT? And if so, what is the window I have to make sure I get something that isn't a downgrade, and what is the best way to make sure they don't give me a downgrade?

You should be getting an order number which when you lookup will give you the specs on the new system.

As for what your going to get, well there are many possiblities, but once you know you can take it from there.
