Gateway P-6831 FX Review - Page 5

Nearly two hour battery life is pretty impressive considering. I figure my P-171S FX will run 5-10 minutes or so less given the CPU difference. But I won't be running on battery all that often anyway, and the maximum length I need is about 70 minutes. So more than enough for my needs.

i'd like to see what the 45nm chips do for battery life,

could someone with a T9300 or T9500 run a dvd drain test?

Great review, I've been wondering how the 8800m GTS would perform IRL programs. Going to have to find one now

How goes it with the XP drivers? Any improvement?

BUMP! I chatted with one of their sales people today and this was their official answer on XP:

Courtney says:
how may i help you today?

Ryan says:
Just a quick question about the P-171S series of laptops. I checked the download section and didn't see Windows XP drivers for everything. Is it just because it's a new model and they aren't quite ready, or will there not be any?

Courtney says:
we wont provide xp drivers for the unit because it wasnt built for xp

IMO, Microsoft seems to be trying to stop marketing XP. So, I'm not too surprised by this answer. It's the same thing for Alienware.

I just bought one of these from BB on Saturday. I have a T5550 (1.83) in mine. While I am not complaining, seems odd... I even double checked the box. Both the box and the display at BB says 1.66 on it.

While it isn't a huge bump... it was a nice surprise.

I love it!

I was pawing on the display model at Best Buy and really like it. Mine is supposed to ship on Friday, so I guess I need to make up my mind about the XP thing soon.

I was a little disturbed by Vista when it was launched... I mean it was bad... especially drivers... I had an 8800 GTS in my desktop and it couldn't run Anarchy Online at all... it was terrible! (and THATS an OOOOLD game).... however I went back to XP and there was no problems.

I was concerned about it again with this laptop, being as there isn't XP driver support... but I am happy to report that it runs perfectly.... along with BF 2, BF 2142, LoTRO, Command and Conquer 3, and Hellgate London.

I think for the price... the build quality is actually very good. I have taken it apart (top case and bottom case) and everything appears to look good.. even the hinges have a good solid feel, and strong springs on them, the LCD does not wobble like my MacBook or my brother's HP 17".

Best Thread I've ever seen!

Ok you guys have hooked me. I have read the thread end to end + connections twice. Thank you GoHack for starting it so I could find an end to my suffering and to Spinitch for connections and Tutorials. Awsome job.
I have been looking to get a smokin LT since Nov. I had a Vostro in hand when the 8800m hit and I sent the Vos back to Dell the day after it came. I ordered and cancelled a 4.5k$ 9262 Sagar because... well its a lot of dough. Then Dell gave me 10k in credit and I have been fiendishly building xps's daily. At one point I had the GW P6831FX in my hands at BB but set it down because of the Proc speed. I can't tell you how much stress I have had over all of this.
And then I found you all. Thank you soooo much. Now I am so *%#$ excited I can hardly stand it. My 6831FX will arrive from BB online tomorrow 1399, my 2 Seagate 7200 200g's $360 and my socket p T9300 $340 will arrive in 3 days from the egg. Total cost with tax about 2300. I get a smokin fast LT, the joy of upgrading and my wife is happy too. Thanks. Sorry for the long winded post. Keep up the great thread, I am hanging on every line and bench.

Is this thread still being monitored by poeple modding this machine? I have questions about things I've read, first is it true that my 2 new seagate sata 3.0 7200.2 drives are not going to have the full performance due to sata 150 support from the chip on this board?

Sorry for bad spelling. Another question was about memory. I read somewhere that the 1G and 2G mem chips that come stock in this are in fact running in dual channel mode. What util would I use to verify this?

Got mine @ BB with $80 off. As for Kalison(posting his review north of this one) IT COMES WITH 1.83 CORE2 DUO T5600 which is nothing groundbraking still sweetens the deal lot more for future buyers. Will post the pics and againg thank you for all your guides (GoHack, Spinatch). Outstanding job. BtW, shieldzone.com has excellent transparent film to protect the paint for $32. Just ordered it and will update as soon as it arrives. GOTTA GET NEW SCREEEEEN )

Thanks for the tip on the protector. I want one to cut down on the fingerprints more than anything!

So far the only modification I've made has been to add a 60GB SATA drive to back up my data. And of course an HDMI to DVI cable, as my VGA cable looked horrible on my 22" LCD.

I dropped a T9300 and Blu-Ray drive in it, and it moved my Windows Vista Experience to a whopping 5.1, just .5 less than my Quad Core Q6600, 8800 Ultra 768mb desktop. Can't ask for much more than that!!
