Duke's Work Log: It's 2008, time to RAPE! - Page 9

I think Dave has a raid 10 setup (from his sig)

I've got to ask, why Nvidia? Your a big gamer right?
I think (objectively) from a gamers point of view you'd be better off waiting for the 2x4870 cards, or at least crossfire 4870 today. (I wanted to be able to have 4 DVIs)

With the 2x4870 (1gb supposed to about $550 I think) you can add another 4870 later to keep bleeding edge or another double card. The 280 is not testing well against crossfire 4870, its closer to a single 4870 at a higher price point

I've never had SLI or XFire in the past and i dont see a need for it now or any time in the future. I like the value nvidia has and until the 4870 cards are released, the 280 seems to be the best valued card anyway.

Yeah but its only something like 5% extra on the build cost ~$100 for the single 2x4870 card which is supposed to be better than 4870 crossfire - which itself has over double the frame rates at 1920x1200 than the 280 in COD4

I'm not an ATI fan boy, not even a big gamer, just commenting on the recent articles I read through, giving you the numbers to think through

I've always used AM CPU fans. The thermalright and zalman seem to still be top dogs.

Meh... I dunno.

It's only going to RAPE the GTX280 for about the same price.

I think it goes along the same lines of this thread eh?

You could wait and wait and wait until newer stuff comes out, but that's computers for ya'. You've (Steve) been more than patient on building your new PC. At this point I would just say, see what happens over the next 3 weeks with prices/performance, then pull the trigger regardless.

That's a good point... damn it and today was gonna be the day too!!

You're right though, I'm preparing for games like Fallout 3 when that won't even be released for a few months... I think I can wait 3 weeks. Thanks guys.

Its non existent. Been busy in my RL haven't had time to worry about a new rig.

I want one badly... gotta get my present rig and two Macs up before i start a new project.

I had a hard drive crash recently... gotta recover data...

well waiting a little longer only means you will have the new gen of CPU and Mobos to choose lol

I am liking the DDR3 Memory

I heard you won't see much performance increase with DDR3 until the next lines of chipsets.
