Geez...
This argument got old several years ago.
There's nothing wrong with getting an AW system, I've bought six... four desktop, two laptops. For value/performance, it's difficult to beat Alienware when it comes to configured high performance systems.
While some people feel the need to pinch every dollar they can with a system, so they spend the time shopping, researching, ordering, waiting for parts, then assembling and installing software, sometimes people just want a decent system ready to plug in and use.
As I said, I've bought six AW systems, and only two of them cost more than $2200 so it's entirely possible to get a good deal with AW. Last desktop I ordered from AW was cheaper than a Dell with as similar a configuration I could come up with...
Steve is going to pay a premium of course due to the 790i, and the ddr3, but that's always the case with new stuff at AW. You'd pay a pretty penny if you bought the same hardware as well rather than compromising on parts for best price.
I just decided to build a cheap system to tide me over until AW has Nehalem processors and better vid cards than the 9800 line. I can understand with all the time and worry I've spent on just a quick build, why Steve would opt for just letting AW build it, and if anything happens to it, AW will deal with that also. If I have an issue, AW isn't going to deal with it for me...
Bottom line is, if Steve can afford it, why not? Maybe he has better things to do with his time. Maybe you guys are just upset that some people can afford to have Alienware build them a system and you can't.
I'm looking forward to reading your impressions Steve. With the number of systems you've bought from AW now, I'm sure you're comfortable with what you'll recieve... All the systems I've bought from Alienware have been great machines.
