Problem with 1GB + 2GB of ram in 9300/Gen2

I have a 9300 converted to an XPS Gen2. I've been using a pair of 1GB 533Mhz sticks and today replaced one of the 1GB sticks with a 2GB 667Mhz stick. If I place the 2GB stick in slot B and the 1GB in slot A, the system won't POST. If I reverse them, the system is fine, but the BIOS, Memtest, and Windows XP (Home version) only show 2GB. Only CPU-z shows 3GB. I've tried the /3gb switch, but as I expected it had no effect.

I've used mismatched sticks in this system before with no problems and the system does run fine as long as the 2GB stick is in slot A.

Any ideas on why the last GB is not showing (except in CPU-z)?

No ideas? I really need to know whether I need to return this memory before time runs out. Is there some system or OS limitation here? Is there a workaround?

If I'm not mistaken, your i9300 chipset only supports a maximum of 2gb RAM.

And so does XP.

The XPS Gen 2 and i9300 only do up to 2GB.

XP 32-bit can see a little over 3GB of physical memory at the most.

I did not know that. I feel really stupid for not knowing that before I ordered. Thanks for the info.

I had the same problem when installed an extra 2 gig in a mates laptop (not a dell) and it wouldnt post, it turned out it only supported 2 gig of ram.

Yup. I did this a while ago. Gave weird memory errors. The 9300 simply won't support more than 2gb. I tried 2.5gb and it still complained.
