Dell BIOS WLAN whitelisting?

Thread Starter
Ok, I'm writing this in light of a mistaken HP pavillion dv2715nr purchase. I bought the HP with the hopes of upgrading the Broadcom 4310 WLAN to an Intel 4965 WLAN. I even ordered the Intel 4965 option kit from HP small business. However, my attempts were thwarted by a post-install error message (104: unsupported wireless network device detected. please remove and restart.) It seems HP puts a whitelist in their BIOSs so that you can only use the WLAN that came in the machine.

Long story short, I was pissed and returned the laptop. I'm looking for a laptop that will support Linux well (preferably something with an Intel/Santa Rosa chipset), and the Dell Inspiron 1420N (the one with Ubuntu) is at the top of my list to check out. Could someone please tell me if Dell whitelists their WLANs? I plan on plopping in my 4965 that I so eagerly spent $80 on.

Any information will be hellpful !

To the best of my knowledge Dell does not whitelist hardware like HP does.

As long as the microcode supports the type of device it should be ok to pretty much try to install almost anything within reason..... network devices should be ok. I never remember dell to put such limitations in their bioses.

My friend just dropped one of those in his dell btw and it works very well..
