m15x Strange pricing

So the advertisement on Alienware.com says:
Available Now!

  • Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX
  • 2GB 667Mhz RAM
  • WideXGA+ (720p)
Select Now $2,149

But when you click it, it gives you the 8600 version. Which means it's actually CHEAPER to get a 8700 than it is to get an 8600.

You have to pay an additional $500 over the advertised price to get what they advertise... which is... illegal? So I asked customer support and here's what they said:

Michael: ok, and the pre-configured version with 2.4hz and 8800m GTX, when i click on it, it gives me the 8600 instead
Michael: and if i try to get back the 8800m it charges me an additional $500, is that right?
Armando D.: All charges will apply when making changes from the original configuration.
Michael: but the original configuration says it comes with the 8800, but when i choose it it gives me the 8600 instead
Armando D.: That is what the system features, meaning that you will be able to select the card.
Michael: I mean it says: Available Now! Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz, NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX, 2GB 667 Mhz RAM, Wide XGA+ (720p), $2,149
Michael: but it really means
Armando D.: Right
Michael: you cant get that for 2149?
Armando D.: It means that it is available for that machine
Michael: but not for that price
Armando D.: Correct
Michael: Oh. that's a little strange, but ok
Michael: thanks
Armando D.: Thank you for considering Alienware, have a great day!

Anyone else find that weird that they advertise specs and a price, yet if you try to get it, you don't get the advertised specs... or if you do get the specs, you don't get the advertised price?

Yeah its f'd up, I saw what you saw, if you REALLY wanted to make a stink about it all you have to do is place an order for it!

(Oh yeah take screen shots).......

If you become a big enough pain in the ass they will honor the 8800 at that price, but you'll have to get through alot of "it was a website pricing mistake, we have a disclaimer, we are not responsible for.....etc" crap.

It just depends on how much you can take and how big of an arse you want to be in order to wade through all the corporate ass covering and south american call center transfers.

But it plainly shows the 8800 for that price!(and not an "also available with" crap either)

Agree 100%, koshinn. I will stop short of calling it false advertising because I don't know the exact legal definition of it. But I will say it is VERY misleading! Here's hoping they get that fixed asap.

I would try that, but I really want a black m15x, so I'm waiting...
Hmmm. I was waiting for someone to point that out. I hope this isn't some scheme by Alienware to get people to by their m15's. lol, because a lot of people are falling for this..it's just a shame that I want a black m15x. lol
post #6 of 22
Wow, the price is also higher than when I previously configured it.
When I configured it, I came out with the same price. Hmm.
It is strange that what was the "$2699" version is now the customizable version.
Why not just kill the other 2 options and go with the one?
Maybe they have a lot of the other 2 options pre-biuilt already?
I hope the the basic config is released tomorrow with a black color option, the 1st of a new month! But, maybe this is just wishful thinking...
So now there's only 2 types of m15x, or the 2 base configurations.
What happened to the third one?
"coming soon" vcw, it's the same m15x though.
So now they have a preset Gaming and Entertainment option:
Gaming~$3900
Entertainment~$2200
$3900, ouch. I'm waiting for the black m15x base config to come out. I can get an 8800mgtx for much less than this!
Cold day in hell before I would pay $3900 for a 15" notebook. Heck my dual quad core Mac Pro with 16gb of ram didnt cost that much.
mmmmmmmmmmmm

Just alittle more... but maybe im just not good at math or something... i guess i need to go get another degree in math...

some reps need to taken away for that comment...
Easy littlefrankus. He sounds like a fanboy.
Some people just don't believe in spending a lot for a notebook. It's just a preferential thing.
You can just take his rep.
This is the reason i don't come around here anymore. It is easy to see who the fanboy is an if you know how to shop 16gb of ram doesn't add $3500. So you need to learn a little before you open your mouth. This goes to show the mentality of "most" AW owners.

Plus you need to know who you are talking about kid. I have owned more computers in the last 2 years than your age equals to be (and yes it is more than 5). More Alienware computers as well. You have to graduate high school first to get a degree, a degree in math? Come on guy.....

Who really cares about rep?! is that still a big deal around here still? I guess a new round of noobs come here and think there life revolves around this rep thing??? Seriously......

You shouldnt compare a load laptop with a strip down mac DESKTOP...that has only the basic items chosen... and if u looked on their website it adds 3500 bucks for ram... even with buying ram from like newegg is still going to cost some money for 16 gbs of RAM even for a mac you must have gotten a strip down mac to keep it under that price with the warranty other software and then tax on top of all.....also i am not a kid .... and i do have two college degrees... working on my third degree... if u dont like coming around then why post something that you wouldnt buy for that price... just keep looking the other way...
I was not comparing the laptop to a Mac Pro, was really giving a comparative observation between the apparent typical price gouge. What dies checking Apples website have to do with anything? Like i said anyone dumb enough to buy the 16gb from Apple is well, dumb.

If you have two degrees what are you repairing computers for?

I have been on NBF for a pretty long time, fella.

I never put 'people down' for buying one, more power to them. I was stating y opinion on the price just like the 10 people before me did....
i repair computer on the side also when i was in high school i ran the technology center in the high school and networked and repaired macs all day long... i can take a mac apart and put back together in my sleep if i want... if ur not comparing price then why bring up how much your mac pro didnt cost you... compared to the m15x at 3900 fully loaded...dude if you owned that many computers in two years maybe u should get some that can actually work well...

oh my god he called me fella... o my.. wow only my dad says that and hes 60....
