Hmm, I did not find a XP wireless lan driver for your model at HP's support site? What did you download?
It is not "Vista compatible", rather it was designed to be run with Vista. Unfortunately, a lot of folks have had problems retro-grading to XP, though I can not say that I blame you, frankly, this model is really more appropriate for XP than Vista, the single-core Celerons are a bit over-matched with Vista.
As [INFO]NOS and ite4life asked, which WLAN does this model use? I checked the specs on HP's site, but they did not elaborate...I would imagine either a Broadcom or Intel...hopefully someone may be able to get you the right drivers...
