Gateway 7410GX

Can't belive I didn't know about this great forum before. Would have helped me out tons.
Anyway
I have this strange problem with my 7410GX, it is just randomly shutting down. I recently had my hard drive go down and I bought a new one, and I can't even finish the format, the laptop shuts down in the middle. So I am thinking maybe its some kind of over heating issue.
I look at the fans they are both working fine.
I did a test and left it alone in the BIOS screen and it shut down a while later.

Back story of the laptop: I had the same problem that everyone has with the cracked hinges. I replaces the LCD cover, finally got to windows and my hard drive started making bad noises and pretty much died. I bought a new hard drive and we're at the present stage(above)

Any help would be much appreciated. I am really fed up with this thing. Spend like 150 on it and now its giving me this crap.

Thank you

A new dose of thermal grease should alleviate the overheating. Check out the guide to get to it here: http://emachines.fizi.ca/

Do you really think it is over heating?
I looked at the guides I didn't see anything that showed how to apply thermal grease

Well the only two choices for it to randomly shutdown is that it is overheating or the sensor chip has failed and it is detecting that the laptop is overheating and it shuts down to prevent damage. Second choice is pretty much fatal, you would need a new motherboard. When I usually work on laptops that shutdown, it is usually a heat issue. You can try to blow dust out of the laptop and heatsinks first to see if there is any blockage in air circulation. The guide will show you how to remove parts of the laptop and the heatsink is farely easy to remove.

Just unscrew in a criss cross fashion, remove the old paste from the heatsink and cpu and clean with 90%+ alcohol. Find some artic silver paste and use a rice sized portion and spread on the cpu die. Install heatsink it should not shutdown anymore. If it does, then you have a bigger issue.

Does it shut down even after a cold start? or does it shut down after a couple minutes?

Great news. Thanks to you guys looks like my problem is solved. I took off the heatsink and found that the thermal paste was very heavly dried up. So I put a new batch of silver on and it has been on for 12 hrs now and no reboot. I have you guys to thank for that.
I appreciate your help.

One more question if you don't mind. I installed WinXP pro. I'm have an issue with the drivers. I went to the gateway site and downloaded all the drivers I could, but sound still does not work.
Under device manager I see the

"Multimemedia AUdio COntroller" and "PCI Simple Communications COntroller" under the ? mark with a yellow ! mark on it. Is there any other place to get the drivers. I've installed them twice now from the gateway website and a no go.

Check out the fizi website again and go under drivers.

You might want to contact Gateway Tech Support, you can get one, but, you will have to pay the shipping & handling and they run around 20 bucks, that's CHEAP, for a Restore disk-OS with all of the drivers for your notebook.......I always make it a point, and if any Gateway notebook or desktop doesn't come with one, I always get one to keep handy..sure doesn't hurt any to have it around...

I tried gateway but they don't seem to have it. The on line chat person said it was around $20. I have requested some info from Gateway as to were I am to find one since it did not come with the computer. Hope they get back with me or I will have a useless computer. I can't go on line to download anything because I can't get on the internet. Tried some other sources, but have not heard from them. Hope Gateway will get back again.

7410gx gateway

I bought a gateway 7410gx some time the first few months of 2005. It had to have several repairs with in the first 2 years. I put it away and bought another laptop. I took it out to see if it would load, but it would not. I reloaded xp on it and it will boot up and run xp just fine. The problem is I can't restore to the original way it came. I can't get on the net or run a cd or dvd. Since I can't get on the net I am not able to down load to the computer. I guess I could try to download to one of my other computers to a disk and try and transfer to the gateway.

I have contacted Gateway support but they have not been any help. I am trying to find a recovery disk. Any help would be appreciated. One person on gateway chat said it was $20. but then said they could not sell it anymore to contact email support. I did that but have never received a reply.

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't make this any harder than it is, if you can , or have another lappy, GO HERE and download the drivers for your 7410gx (you said you had another notebook, so used that to download all of the 7410gx drivers) and in the future please don't use 2 threads for the same topic.......THANK YOU
