Pavilion ZV5000 Dim Screen Problem

Thread Starter
I have a HP Pavilion ZV5000 with a dim screen problem. When the computer is on and you are looking at it head on, the screen look black (as if it was not on at all).

If I push and release the switch (as if I was closing the lid and reopening it), the screen flickers on for a brief second. I can see the desktop and everything. But it is not even lit up for a second before it goes dark again.

If you look at the monitor from random angles (like from the side, or from low down), you can vaguely see the desktop.

And if you plug in an external monitor, the external monitor shows the desktop just fine.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Do I have to replace the whole screen? Or is there something else I can replace?

Thanks!

It sounds like the LCD inverter has blown. Yes, it is replaceable, though I have NOT done one personally. Several years back, where i work, we had a whole series of toshiba laptops where the inverters went out on a regular basis...pain in the butt, however, they were farily easily replaced.

BTW, here is a link to a site that will walk you through replacing the inverter for a Pavillion zv5000:
