I need some help regarding Blue Screen of Death!

I have had my mALX since June-2007. It had been an awesome computer.....except for one main issue that continues to resurface: When I start my computer the first time it gets BSOD and then restarts. Later it tells me that the error has to do with NVidia. After that the computer runs fine (well there are some issues in WoW which I have written about before).

This issue (BSOD) used to happen only rarely. However when it got to the point where I could not start the computer for like 50 tries then I called AW. They were great and helped me to update the drivers (November) which seemed to take care of the problem.

Now it is back again and I am getting BSOD much more than before. One of my friends advised me to go to a Web Site that had new drivers for my video cards (M-ALX NVIDIA G71 7950 GTX WITH 512MB,NVIDIA SLI TECHNOLOGY CONFIGURATION).

Any ideas folks?

what version of the drivers are you using?

How long has it been since you reloaded windows?

I assume the BSOD is giving you an "nv" error. It would help if you had the specific error language.

That is a good question!

I am at work (shhh) so I will have to guess for now. Though I do have my mALX with me and I will boot it up at lunch (2 hours from now). I believe that the driver I am using is The 7950GTX for the 9750 (NVIDIA GeForce Go7950 GTX (m9750)). Though it could also be the drivers for the mALX (NVIDIA GeForce Go7900 GTX w/512 (mALX))

Which ones do you think it should use?

I iwll try and find that out the next time it happens. I have not reloaded windows since the computer is only 7 months old. Should I?

The oddest issue I had with this wonderful computer was that it would not boot up at my last assignment ( I am a Financial Specialist for hire), sometime as many as 50 times. yet I almost never had that problem at my home or at my son's house or any other place I have used it at.

When I called AW about it they thought that I may need to reseat the vid cards but then when it was fine at home I never pursued that angle.

I had that same type of occurance for over a year, and then in a matter of 4 days my 7700 wouldn't boot at all: the mobo had slowly died on me.

Might want to fix this while you have a chance. (as in before the warranty is up)

Yo mean it wouldn't boot at your office either?

AW helpers pretty much ruled any mobo issues out. They said it is more than likely a vid driver or card issue.

Well that's good to hear. blazertek. I guess reloading the driver might be the best thing to do.

The latest. ForceWare Release 169

But you may also want to look at some drives here.

I got the one for Vista from that site. However right know I am using the drivers for the 7950GTX cards that Alienware has on their site that are beta drivers. If they give me problems then I will try the forceware ones.

I installed the beta drivers on the AW web site. I am no longer getting the Blue Screen of Death, Yay! However I am still having the "lag" problem after about an hour of usage. I had thought it was only apparent in WoW but now I am also noticing it when I watch TV on my computer through my SlingBox!

I have sent an e-mail about this to AW ALX support. Hopefully we will get to the bottom of this soon. Weird thing is that this problem was gone for well over a month and then came back. Is it due to a Vista update or what?

This is starting to get on my nerves....

Do you moniutor the cpu temps? If the cpu in the mALX gets to 90 deg C, it will clock itself down and you'll see dramatic frame rate drops.

Can I get a "link"?

I would like to do that. Is there a Web Site where I can get a free download to test for high temps?

Thanks!

Problem solved! Thanks to AW rep, Juan Gonzalez (no, not the baseball player) telling me to try this:

We can easily test if a program or service is the cause. We just need to click on "Start" and type "MSCONFIG" in the search box. The MSCONFIG program will appear at the top. Please right-click on it and select "Run as Administrator."

When the System Configuration Utility appears, please click on the "Startup tab" and click on the "Disable All" button.

Then, please click on the "Services" tab and put a check in the "Hide all Microsoft Services" checkbox (at the bottom). Once the Microsoft services disappear, please click the "Disable All" button. Then, please click on "Apply" and "OK."

When the computer restarts, please test if it is still lagging. If it is not, then one of those programs or services caused the problem.
