Asus X48 Board Trumps All

IT'S BEEN A LONG trek for Intel from their “Overclocking Verboten” days. Today Intel has seen the light (thanks to AMD, to some degree) and churns out really hot enthusiast pieces like the X48 chipset. Morry and Kyle from [H]ardOCP have been fooling around with a hot-off-the-production-line Asus P5E3 Premium. They think there’s nothing quite like it, for all the right reasons. If you want the highest performing motherboard that’s undertaken [H]’s bench tests... this is it.

Oh, hope you’ve been saving up some money...

what again makes this board so great? the fact that it overclocks extremely well?

That's what I was wondering too

DDR3 = teh sux (right now, at least...)

Not to mention Asus (STILL) is having retarded layout issues... I mean... C'mon... The 2nd (or first, depending on how you look at it) PCI slot is ABOVE the first PCI-E (i.e. primary graphics) slot? That's why I love the DFI board I bought... It has a LOGICAL layout...

In a word - yes. All reviews point to the "new standard" this ASUS DDR2 board sets in memory control and overclocking stability.

For those interested, this Anandtech article explains the Rampage "greatness".

It's a bit long - but it details added BIOS functionality, and the apparent BIOS maturity for a board that has yet to be released.

And yes...ASUS coulda done a bit better with the layout.

You're just saying that becuase of your current motherboard.

Nope. DDR3 is still too immature for my tastes. I said the same thing when DDR2 first arrived, and it was valid. For quite a while, DDR400 was faster than DDR2. It wasn't until DDR2 hit 667MHz, and really, 800MHz, before it had a worthwhile advantage over DDR400 with decent (CL2.5 or CL2.0) latencies. The same will hold true with DDR3 over DDR2. It won't be until DDR3 hits 1800MHz that it'll have a worthwhile advantage over DDR2. The high latencies (at its current speed, VS. DDR2) kill it. It was the exact same thing with the transition from DDR to DDR2.

Not to mention the whole price factor. DDR3 is still way too expensive, especially considering its performance against quality DDR2, which can be had for half the price.

expensive???? sure its more expensive than DDR2 but not wallet breaking by any means.

Yeah, it's about the same price now as when DDR2 debuted.

So, just play the waiting game folks, like we always do.

Whereas you can get 4GB of Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 for $200 less than 2GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1333.

Let's think about this for a minute. $200 MORE for HALF the memory, and SLOWER performance. As I stated previously, DDR3 is going to need AT LEAST 1800MHz before it's a worthwhile percentage faster than DDR2 before it's viable to get it. Right now, it doesn't make sense, because it IS ridiculously more expensive than DDR2. Just look at and compare the links.

I'll also say this again. DDR3 WILL overtake DDR2 in due time, just as DDR2 overtook DDR in time. But once again, the price to performance ratio when paired against DDR2 just doesn't make it worthwhile.

I'd rather put that $200 towards an extra step up in the videocard or CPU department, where it will actually count.

So what you're saying is if I don't care about the $200 I can better future proof my machine by buying a DD3 mobo??

Agree on it all.

DDR3 right now is no where near worth the cost when compared to DDR2

That one seems like common sense to anyone

If you want to future proof, go with 4GB of RAM. Is a few points in 3DMark a couple of years down the line worth the extra money? No. It was the choice I had to make. By the time DDR3 is outperforming DDR2 to the point of being worthwhile, your computer will be ancient anyways. It was the same dilemma I faced with my old computer (before I found an "out" and had the opportunity to build a new system) with it's DDR1.

I'm not here to tell you what you can and can't do with your money, but it would be better spent in another area. One more worthwhile to your computer's performance.
