So, get something different, from them or somebody else. The Compal56 was one of the ones I have considered and "blown off". I wouldn't take a chance on getting one with the backlight problem (and it sounds like close to all of them have it, if not all of them) and I wanted better sounding built-in speakers. Plus, I am not crazy about the "different keyboard" layout on the 56. You are NOT happy, that is obvious, so, if you are within your return period, pay the shipping and get something different.
If not, you are probably going to be living with it for a couple years. I would NOT, absolutely NOT let them replace the motherboard on a brand new unit!! NEVER, EVER!! The replacement you get will be refurbished parts, which came out of someone else's "problem" system, and they may, or may NOT have found what was wrong with it. A customer has an intermittent problem, they replace the motherboard, and they never find the problem. Where does that motherboard go...into the stock of refurbished parts!! It all depends on the QA department at the manufacturer in question, but, it is a crapshoot at best. Refurbished (read USED) parts should be a last resort, not something you go to in the first 30 days. Ever. I just got finished proving that Dell has a junkpile that their "refurbished" screens come out of. They don't know the good ones from the bad ones. You are NOT going to get a brand new motherboard from them. Doesn't matter what they tell you, it will be a refurb.
Again, don't do it!!
(just my opinion)
