CD rom swap with two dif laptops.....

Ok so heres the story i have a dell inspiron 6000 with a DVD-R/RW, and i bought an alienware area 51 m7700 from my friend. The problem comes in here the alienware only has a DVD-R. I was wondering is it at all possible to swap the two with no inherant risks to either machine? if it is possible where can i find how to do it? if you could let me know that would be great.

As long as it's the same type drive interface, it'll work.
