800Mhz Memory

Thread Starter
Friends,

Does anybody know when 800Mhz memory will be released by Dell for their notebooks?
Probably not until at least when a chipset that supports 800Mhz memory is released... until then they would just downclock to 667MHz anyway so not much point

aka: until their next line release

I don't get it. Don't the XPS already have it:
XPS M1530, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7800 (2.6GHz/800MHzFSB, 4M L2 Cache)?

The processor has a 800MHz FSB but the chipset only supports 667 MHz RAM

Yes, the CPU FSB and RAM frequency support are separate, and not until the next iteration later this year will 800MHz RAM be supported in mobile chip.

Hmmm. Ok ok so even if your CPU is 800MHZ, if your ram is 667Mhz then ur CPU will be forced from 800Mhz to 667Mhz? Am I getting this?

I just looked up crucial's site for RAM and saw:
CT768754 DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64

So i think the 800s are in. They also have the 667 version too but the 800 is $50 more for same ram

No, you are not quite getting it . The CPU bus speed and the RAM bus speed are separate. Ie: the CPU runs at 800MHz whilst the RAM is at 667MHz. The CPU does not clock down the match the RAM.

However, yes, the RAM you pointed out in previous post is 800MHz. But this is rather pointless at the moment because the chipset only supports a RAM speed of 667Mhz. Thus, the RAM will clock down to match this (the CPU still sticks with 800MHz bus speed!). So not worth the extra money at this point.
