Not that it really matters since this replacement is going back in a couple days, but as a funny side note.

I just now noticed that it has the cheaper LCD, 1440 x 900

They didn't get ONE thing right.

I should have just accepted the 1720 and sold it for an M1710

Hang in there man. At least at this point you're probably going to be getting an M1730 that will be very kickass

What scares me is that they were able to place an order for a brand new E1705, I don't know how... but they did. So I am afraid of ending up with another E1705 that simply matches my configuration.

Now they SHOULD give me something a bit better since I have been dragged through hell and back, but I don't want an M1730! I was promised that but I think that is OVERKILL for me! I would be VERY happy with an M1710(7950GTX).

Dude they still havent taken care of you??? You should have 8800SLI in your hands by now. Nothing about the replacement they sent you makes sense. Slower memory, hd, vid card and weaker screen???? wow....

I agree with everyone here that you deserve more; however it's entirely within dells right to offer you the E1705 if they have one of similar specs, a 1720 but maybe you could argue for a single 8800m card, or hell there are still 15 1710's in the outlet.

It's what I expect to get come Tuesday when my replacement pops up.

One more thing though, These Dell's are refurbs, there was obviously something wrong with them, what if you are getting a refurb with the bad metal casing that shorts out motherboards? Something to think about.

Dell does not have the "right" to offer him the 1720 as he has made it clear that he must have DVI. The 1710 yeah and as he said he would rather have that system. I think at this point he deserves a 1730.

Didn't they offer him a vga>dvi adapter?
You can't do VGA -> DVI. You can do DVI -> VGA, but not the other way around. You can't turn an analog signal into a digital signal.
I take that back. You CAN do it, but it's very crude, and not that cost effective either.
yeah I dont care if you "can" do vga > DVI with some lame dongle, I wouldnt accept it.
I hope you get a M1730 and are really happy with it, the pain you've gone through is unnecessary cruelty.

Yeah they tried to offer me that at one point... What a joke!

Oh well, I am pretty sure I got something done now.

The thing that really bothers me is that when I look at the order for this shitty replacement and it cost dell $1846.15 when I go into the outlet I find this...

<TABLE class=tblLayout><TBODY><TR><TD class=gridCell>$1,909.00</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>XPS M1710
<INPUT type=hidden value="XPS M1710" name=model_0></TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>
</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>Intel Core 2 Duo - 2330
</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>Genuine Windows XP Media Center 2005
</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>17
</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>100 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>1000
</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>DVD/RW
</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950 GTX
</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>
</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>
</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>Intel Pro Wireless 3945
</TD><TD class=gridCell vAlign=center align=middle>Laptop
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I think I would have been a little bit happier with that....

c0ax: Out of curiosity, why did you accept the packages that they sent you? (The E1705's.) I would have just told the delivery person that I refused it. Then it would immediately go back to Dell with no effort on your part.

It really sucks to have to deal with what you've gone through. I had a similar experience with Gateway back in '95 / '96. I had a Pentium 75 that was just unreliable. Somehow, someone at Gateway received one of my problem tickets and sent me and Email simply saying that this isn't how Gateway does business and sent me a brand new Pentium 133 system.

Modern support channels are so scripted and structured that the people you talk to can't wipe their bum without it being allowed by management and directions written on their flow charts.

Have you thought about submitting your story to the consumerist. I have seen people get results by utilizing that route.

I am going to hold off until tomorrow and see what happens then. I didn't want to simply refuse the package for fear of it getting confusing for them when they get it back. I can tell them I have it in my possession, it is not right, and I will send it back overnight tomorrow if they ask me too, they just have to email me a label. If by the end of the phone call tomorrow I am not happy, I will be sending everything to consumerist.

Okay so the rep called me (woke my ass up at 7:50 AM). I explained everything, and he said "Okay well I am going to go ahead and place the order for you, he said that his first priority is to get my an M1730, but if they are low in stock in them from repherb I will be getting an M1710, and if they are out of those, they will ship me another E1705 with the same parts in mine. So we shall see....

I already know I am going to get an E1705, I just know it.
E-mail one or more of the people on that list that was linked to you earlier at Consumerists. Don't let it go any longer.

Why? It is resolved now?

I am either going to get what I paid for, or better.

Thats all that dell ever promised. I don't see why I should do anything else at this point.

I was never out to rip dell off, I was very happy when I was told I was getting an M1730, and I am happy again at the possibility but I never set out for that, I just wanted a replacement for my bad E1705.

Besides, I have about two years left on CC, so if another one has problems, I will push for something a bit more modern, I don't deserve a $3000 computer, I only paid 1500 for this one last year, and if I get a repherb M1710 I would be ecstatic!
