Whats the fix?

My brand new M1730 (1 hr out of the box) sound is crackling as well.

I found it happened most with light FX enabled while playing a song with windows media player. Also the headphone out would seem to transfer noise from hd access and such.

Really annoying. A quick call to XPS support and a new laptop is being built and sent to me.

Could be a defective motherboard who knows. 2 weeks and I'll know.

finally got video!!! my wife did anyways, a while ago just been too busy to post it up until now. chatting with dell now, hope they don't try to give me a new computer (different model) because of this, but i know it might come to that. oh well, Miki doesn't play any video games so i suppose it doesn't matter what laptop she has...

Thats your HD btw. We had those (hard drive noises) at work as well and sometimes its about to fail, other times it was just the "noise" its made.

+1

I dunno what it is, but it kind of went away after I did a reinstall of vista. Every once in a while I still hear it though, but it could be just the mp3s perhaps...

it happens with 2 separate hard drives, and both of them are silent in my m1710, so if it is a hd noise, it is caused by the laptop somehow?

ya, you cant tell but it is very loud. and it sometimes happens more frequintly

okay wood, I was looking at your video and wow that is interesting... I was timing the intervals and they were pretty consistent. Has your MB been changed out?

Here is the question I would have... What happens if you took the hard drive completely out and booted off a floppy or USB drive and ran some DOS stuff? If it stops, then your MB is somehow over volting or driving your hard drives.

If it does do it, I would check for small animals, bugs, boogie man, etc... lol.

You think it could be a capacitor or clock chip? I have heard chips and caps scream and whistle before. but not like this...
