Refund???

Dell is telling me I have to take a refund or a 1720 for my i1705. That's it. If I take the 1720 they will give me a dongle. WOOT!!!

I sent an email to the VP of service... lets see what happens now.

how much would your refund be for? if you paid a bunch for the 1705 and their giving you the total back you might want to take it and invest in a new system, then again why invest in a new system when you can get them to replace it with a better one for free. Got a question for you though do you have C.C. it seems most people who have luck seem to have C.C. or I might be just seeing things, who knows?

that's what I was about to ask. How much? You could invest in a xps 1710 in the outlet possibly, get CC and then "upgrade" later on.

I have the i1705 and I have CC btw and I'm still waiting for their decision. They've told me they would send me a laptop with a built-in dvi port and I'm unsure what model that'll be.

They told me all along that I would get one with a built in dvi.... but today that all changed. I have next biz day on my laptop... but not CC

As far as amount. It's around $1500. But the only laptop I have seen that is better than my 1705 for that money is a gateway....

Hehe. I just went through the same thing. My 1705 crapped out. In the end I went with a refund, but be warned I was told the refund was not allowed after the fact, and that I'd get a pro-rated amount of 75%. I filed a complaint with the BBB based on the 100 different answers I received from different incompetent reps. In the end a full refund was granted.

BTW, I am now using said Gateway, it's a nice machine.

Push push push until the case gets escalated. IMO the recent surplus of E1705 woes are making Dell feel financially strained in a way

Haha, not *too* worried, and part of me almost wants the thing to die so I could get the M1730 as a replacement . I could go drop mine down the stairs and get one but my ethics remain in tact

So far it has held up really well, I bump and bruise it all the time and it still performs strong. Just a while back I really dropped it and a small piece of the magnesium frame chipped off leaving a gap near the right speaker still wasn't enough to stop it from pushing on

LOL, I so know what you mean. When I got the laptop I got the 2yr CC warranty as my son was 3 at the time and I believe my wife was pregnant with our first daughter. I just knew that one day one of the kids would come by with a leaky sippy and ruin my laptop. Well for almost two whole years they didnt do one thing to it. That was until Dell agreed to do a system exchange on 12/31/07. I woke up 1/1/08 to my two year old daughter jumping on my trying to wake me up and she was soaking wet. I ran down stairs only to find my E1705 on the coffee table, open and a huge puddle of water on the keyboard and under the laptop. I didnt get mad cause, 1) I left the cup of water next to it, 2) I have CC and 3) it was getting replaced anyway. There were so many times that I wanted to "Drop" it down the stairs or something just cause I could but never did. Always had that thought of "what if they dont replace it and im out a laptop cause I was bored."

I too have had my system for a few years with cc but I just never had the nerve to damage as I was too afraid of what may happen.

My system decided to not boot one day so I called them up about it I mentioned the multiple repairs for heat problems and how the system had at one time given me a bit of a burn so they agreed to replace it, now I don't think theirs much wrong with the, I mean that it wont boot I figure its the memory is unseated or something but they didnt even try to figure out the problem they just said they would replace it as it was a safety hazard. I feel kinda bad like I'm demanding something for nothing but my system has been sent off 3 times and had 3 mobo and video card swaps and it still sometimes gets too hot to touch, so even if they get the thing to work I am just glad they repalced it for being too hot, not because it wouldnt boot cause I bet ya if they reseat the memory it will boot right up and then proceed to get so hot the bottom paint, stickers, and foot thingys melt off, lol, that really does happen.

Yeah that does happen. Some of the stickers on my E1705 are all shrunk at the ends and you cant even read the words on them anymore. I was like wow......

Well, they will not budge. A refund or the amount I paid towards an XPS and a 10% off for the rest. Super.... NOT

Anyway, I'm taking the refund and buying a Gateway.

Blow me Dell
that sucks man, but im sure if you tried a few more times you would've gotten what you wanted... but as they say, time is money
post #17 of 53
Maybe, these days they seem to be severely cracking down on XPS trades for E1705's though
post #18 of 53
Man thats a pretty weak deal. Like Bigee said, I bet if you tried a bit more you might have gotten what you wanted. Although pdonket might be right, they noticed they are losing out on this and put an end to it. Sucks for us and in the end it sucks for them cause they are gonna lose customers over it. Not our fault the E1705 has problems and they dont make anything other then the M1730 with DVI.

I hope nothng goes wrong woth your Gateway. If you think you had a hard time getting Dell to give you a refund, just wit til you have problems with your Gateway.

I have owned many different laptops, and Dell is by FAR the best company when it comes to support and making things right.

I'm sorry that Dell didn't give you a "top of the line performance" laptop as a replacement to the "bang for your buck" laptop that you originaly purchased. Fact is, you got a better laptop as a replacement. I bet if you made a pros and cons list you would see it too.

My opinion, Dell made you a good offer: full refund with purchase of an XPS ad 10% off of that XPS, you would be a fool not to take it, a fool.
Yeah Dell's biggest problem is not being able to effectively communicate what can/will happen. 100 different reps will say 100 different things, that's why I went for the refund.

I would have no problem coming back to Dell, but only if they fix their Support issues. One nice thing about Gateway is that they have 100% US reps in support. I've had great experience dealing with reps from India with other companies, but not Dell.
