Possible Switcher ?s: Heat with MB and MBP and Viruses

Thread Starter
I've read a lot about heat issues with Apple notebooks, but I can't really get a good sample size of actual first-hand experience with this question:

Are Mac notebooks too hot to keep on your lap for long periods of time? Are MBs cooler than MBPs or vice versa?

Also, as someone who may be switching from a PC, do most Mac users use some type of antivirus software? If so, what kind? Is there a good free program? I use avast in windows, but it's not free for Mac (though it's still cheap).

Thanks!

I don't use any at all on my Mac, most viruses are .exe files which don't run on a Mac. I think they are only for peace of mind, but they don't do anything.

Virii are not to large a worry right now, trojans do exist, but you have to actually run them yourself, and give them your admin password, for them to do real damage. HINT: If a pic ask for your admin password to view it, DON'T!

But I still reccomend you keep a copy of ClamAV or similar around. Not necessarily running it, but having it on hand as a just in case measure.

In as far as heat, I have used my MBP on my lap fine for periods of time. It does get slightly uncomfortable, especially when doing heavy processing, but is far from unbearable IMO. Keep in mind that anything you get regards this is highly subjective and this is only my personal opinion. What is unbearable to you might be fine for me.

The MB does run a bit cooler IIRC, if only for the lack of a discreet video card. But you will probably get similar results doing heavy processing.

I haven't had any heat issues really(Meaning no overheats). Don't know anyone that has since the first revision or two.

I have noticed that the MacBook and the MacBook Pro both have their CPUs get to about the same temps, but the MBP feels hotter since it has the aluminum shell. However, I can use either one on my lap.

As for AV, there are no viruses on OS X, and the trojans do require you to be an idiot. ClamXAV is at this point, incapable of protecting you from a Mac virus should one ever get created. But it will scan your files for known WINDOWS viruses, cleaning them off your files so you don't infect others.

Actually I would be willing to bet that the video card in the MBP has a lot more to do with it

And this is somewhat incorrect.

All decent av suites these days, including ClamAV and other options on Mac, run detection algorithms based off heuristics of one sort or another. So yes, they could provide some protection actually.

As I mentioned before however, I would keep a copy on hand even if that wasn't the case. Eventually security holes will be found in any OS, and virii can be written to exploit them. In which case when it does happen, it will be a good idea to have some program on hand to help deal with such situations. I am not saying run it constantly, just have it on hand. Being prepared is never a bad idea.

Most windows spywaqre/trojans/hijacks start with the registry. Since OSX doesn't use no stinking registry it is less vulnerable as mentioned above the trojans that are out you have to approve them to be installed and mostly come from porno sites. They come in form of a video streaming plugin that requires you to install to view a steaming video.

The MBP's are warm but they desgin the whole bottom of the laptop to basically be a heatsink. I have had 0 issues with both of my MBP's...
